Details

Beginning knitting will introduce you to yarn, gauge, casting on, two basic stiches: knit and purl, and binding off. The introductory knitting project will be a scarf - with knit and purl you will be able to create a 'sampler' scarf with several stiches to add to your tool box. This will also be a good class for those who want to refresh their skills. Materials required are a smooth worsted weight yarn and size 8 knitting needles, both of which are available for purchase at the shop. Beginning Lace will introduce you to lace-knitting techniques. We will explore different lace patterns, and we'll learn to knit from charts. Use what you learn to knit this cowl: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/baby-camel-cowl-2. Materials needed: (For learning and practice) Size 4 24-inch circular needles, worsted-weight yarn (light-colored solid non-fuzzy), stitch markers. (For the cowl) Approximately 500 yds (100g) fingering weight yarn. Pick something soft that will feel good on your face and neck. Choose a light color, solid, non-fuzzy. Experience: You should be very comfortable knitting and purling. Materials are available for purchase at the shop. You'll need a 16" circular needle in US size 7 and about 95 yards each in two contrasting colors of worsted weight yarn. Learn to knit socks with a simple free pattern: "Interrupted," by Julia Sull. "Interrupted" is knit from the cuff down on double pointed needles and features a simple textured rib and a short-row heel. You'll need about 400 yards of sock yarn, double pointed needles in US size 1 or 1.5, and a tapestry needle for kitchener stitching the toe. Drop Stitch Scarf

Experience level: Beginner (know how to knit and purl). Description: Usually dropping stitches is a bad thing, but sometimes it can achieve stunning results. Join Amy to learn about the Sea Foam stitch pattern to complete the Drop Stitch Scarf by Christine Vogel. Amy will also introduce other drop stitch patterns and talk about designing scarfs. Materials required include one skein of a smooth DK or worsted weight yarn (variegated or hand-painted, hand-dyed yarns yield interesting results; light colors are preferable so that you can see your stitches easily; no bumps or beads), straight or circular needles sized appropriately for your yarn (size 7 or 8 should work well), and a darning needle - all of which are available for purchase at the shop. Now that spring is here and summer is just around the corner, knit this roomy and versatile market bag for your trips to the the farmer's market or the beach. The pattern is brought to you by Laura Patterson of Fiber Dreams and can be found for free on Ravelry at http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/to-market. This bag teaches many different techniques: provisional cast-on, picking up stitches, knitting in the round, two different lace stitches, and a satin stitch. Amy will lead you through each step to create this earth friendly tote. Materials needed: Worsted weight linen or cotton yarn, 300 yards, US 4 (3.5 mm) and 8 (5.0 mm) 24 inch circular needles, any medium size crochet hook and waste yarn. Recommended for advanced beginners knitters and up.
