“Nasrin” in Camper, Loft, and Tones Light.

“Nasrin” is a colorwork sweater by Isabell Kraemer, and the subject of Anne’s upcoming class, which starts Saturday, May 18.

She’s knitting hers with Kelbourne Woolens Camper, a soft fingering weight wool in heathered colors, and an excellent choice for colorwork.

You can choose between the “solid” or “outlined” colorwork motif at the yoke; both charts are included in the pattern. A high contrast color combination shows the pattern best, in my opinion – here are some ideas in Camper!

I also like the idea of flipping the color arrangement so that the main color is dark, and the contrast color at the yoke is light.

Brooklyn Tweed Loft is another yarn that seems designed with colorwork in mind, a woolen-spun fingering weight wool with a bit more structure than Camper.

Loft plays well with Brooklyn Tweed’s other fingering weight yarn, Tones Light – which has a much more vibrant color palette!

New colors in Isager Bouclé!

We’re thrilled to welcome seven new shades of Isager Bouclé!

Isager Bouclé:

  • lace weight
  • looped bouclé texture
  • 100% alpaca
  • 190 yards/50 grams
  • $11 each

Bouclé is a fine alpaca yarn with one looped ply, which makes a fluffy, textured fabric. It especially shines when held together with a smooth yarn, enhancing simple stockinette.

Here’s my version of Jonna Helin’s “Lento” pullover, knit with Malabrigo Ultimate Sock and Isager Bouclé. It’s even softer and fluffier than it looks in these photos – be sure to give it a squeeze next time you’re here at the shop!

Seeking even more softness? Hold Bouclé together with Isager Alpaca 2!

Some of the Isager shades match perfectly across yarn lines, like those above – these will come together to make a solid color. Others don’t have a perfect match, like the shades shown below – they’ll come together to make a slightly marled blend of colors, adding depth and interest to the fabric.

Show and tell: from our classroom.

Show and tell is an ongoing part of our daily Instagram posts, but I like to share it here on the blog from time to time, too. Today, let’s look at knitting projects completed during classes here at our shop!

First up, here’s Claudia and her first completed “Stitch-Sampler Handwarmer,” knit during Anne’s Beginning Knitting class. Anne uses this Churchmouse pattern to teach new knitters because it takes very little time but uses so many techniques – casting on, knitting and purling, of course, but also seaming!

Like Claudia, Dustin used Kelbourne Woolens Germantown for his “Stitch-Sampler Handwarmers,” our go-to worsted weight wool. It’s smooth, easy to work with, comes in all kinds of colors, and holds up to frogging and reuse, if it comes to that!

Stephanie knit this “Field Slipover” during a recent class with Anne. She used Berroco Ultra Wool DK and Isager Silk Mohair together throughout, creating a rich blend of greens and a soft texture. Pattern by Camilla Vad.

Jaime knit this “Shetland Solstice” hat during Nancy’s recent class, using Kelbourne Woolens Camper. As soon as she completed this one, she cast on for another, rearranging the colors to change the look. Then she bought a fresh colorway in Camper, to make it yet again – a ringing endorsement of Gudrun Johnston’s pattern!

Here’s Linda’s “Scout Shawl,” made during Nancy’s class. Florence Spurling’s intricate intarsia and fair isle shawl has a patchwork look, but is worked in one piece, from end to end – a feat, and Linda’s looks lovely in Brooklyn Tweed Loft and Tones Light. Here are a few close-ups!

“SAWA” in Brooklyn Tweed Imbue Sport.

We try to have a handmade sample in every yarn we carry, to give folks an idea of how the yarn knits up, and inspiration for how to use it. When the time came to make a sample in Brooklyn Tweed’s newest yarn, Imbue Sport, Bailey got the coveted assignment.

Here’s her “SAWA” shawl, a brand new pattern from Olga Buraya-Kefelian. Knit in 3 colors, “SAWA” features bold texture and eye-catching shapes made with slip stitches, exactly the kind of sculptural or architectural knitwear Buraya-Kefelian is known for. Check out her MDK Field Guide, we still have copies at the shop!

Imbue Sport’s elasticity is ideal for a highly textured pattern like this, and its softness just right for something wrapped around the neck. Bailey picked greens and blues, a trio of light, medium, and dark.

Dream in Color Pop-Up Club: Mystic Prism.

Dream in Color’s Pop Up Club is back! Every month, we’re getting a special new colorway from Dream in Color, a Tucson-based producer of small batch hand-dyed yarns. Their latest limited edition colorway is here while supplies last!

Mystic Prism is a pastel rainbow of pink, aqua, lavender, and butter yellow.

Variegated skeins like these are beautiful on their own – one skein makes a “Sockhead Slouch” hat or “Reyna” shawl – but they always inspire me to create color combinations. Here are a few I put together with the “Temperance Shawl” in mind, a three color garter stitch and eyelet pattern that works well in low, medium, and high contrast color combinations.

We’re pleased to present the latest from Brooklyn Tweed: meet Imbue Sport!

Just like Imbue Worsted before it, Imbue Sport’s heathered shades are made by blending brilliantly dyed hues of unspun wool, like an artist mixing paints. Hello, Isager Eco Baby.

Another new yarn from Isager! Meet Eco Baby.

Isager Eco Baby:

  • DK weight
  • undyed
  • chainette
  • 68% baby alpaca, 32% organic cotton
  • 164 yards/50g
  • $10 each

Eco Baby is a cousin to Eco Soft, both composed of baby alpaca and organic cotton, chain-plied into lofty, elastic yarns. Eco Baby is a smaller gauge, less fuzzy, and somehow even softer than Eco Soft!

Like many of you, we first became aware of this yarn when we saw it in Camilla Vad’s “Field Sweater,” a pullover with a stunning texture pattern at the yoke, reminiscent of wheat sheaves.  There’s a “Field Cardigan,” too, along with “Field Mittens,” “Field Beret,” and “Field Slipover” – Eco Baby is a lovely choice for any of these patterns.

Anne gilded the lily on her “Field Slipover,” adding a strand of Isager Silk Mohair to her already soft Eco Baby. The result is a decadent, cuddly fabric with a fuzzy halo that still shows the texture pattern beautifully.

You have to touch this one for yourself – come by the shop to give it a squeeze!

Our supply of Isager Silk Mohair is at an all time high, with more colors than ever. Matching shades of Eco Baby and Silk Mohair blend together seamlessly, but these undyed shades can be livened up with colors of a similar value, as well. Here are some ideas!
