KnitScene.

Just when cold weather finally begins here in North Carolina, the Spring 2016 issue of KnitScene arrives. This issue features lots of yarns that can be found at the Hillsborough Yarn Shop. A hat in Swans Island Natural Colors Merino Fingering, a shawl in Fibre Company Road to China Lace, a cardigan in Berroco Artisan… I … [more]

Old made new.

One of our end-of-year rituals here at the shop is counting up the donation jar that sits on our desk. We have a bundle of used books and magazines sitting on a ledge in the hall outside the shop, and we ask for a small donation in exchange for those items. The proceeds are sent to … [more]

Vogue Knitting.

The Winter 2015/16 issue of Vogue Knitting is here! The Swedish Bohus knitting tradition is one thread that runs through this issue, popping up in articles and patterns alike. Founded by designer Emma Jacobsson in the late 1930’s, Bohus Stickning designed luxurious handknit garments into the late 1960’s. Those garments were knit by women in Bohuslän, … [more]

More show and tell.

Time for a second batch of show and tell! Our first round was child-sized, full of sweaters and accessories for little ones; these finished projects are made by grown-ups, for grown-ups, though they’re no less playful. Let’s dig in. Margaretta knit her second “Yipes Stripes Cowl” using five shades of Mirasol Qina, a soft and drapey … [more]

Show and tell: little knits.

December is a busy time of year here at the Hillsborough Yarn Shop. Knitters and crocheters perk up as winter begins, even a warm winter like the one we’re having, and holiday gift-making becomes top priority. We’ve seen so much amazing show-and-tell this month, some of which I’ve captured on camera to share here on … [more]

Sweet Pickles.

We recently received a new book of baby and children’s knits; take a look at Sweet Pickles. These garments are decorated with whimsical stripes and colorwork, but simply-shaped, designed with … [more]

Back in stock: the Lilly Brush.

One of our favorite tools is back in stock: the Lilly Brush. The Lilly Brush is not a glamorous tool, but a practical one, a brush designed to remove pills from knitted fabric. The bristles on the Lilly Brush pick up stray fibers and pills as you brush it across your garment. Since pilling is inevitable for … [more]

New, for weavers.

Over the past week or so, we’ve gotten a couple of new weaving-related items in stock. First up, we’ve got the latest issue of Handwoven magazine, which focuses on weaving with linen. Projects include wearables, like the log cabin wrap above, and lots of home goods, like napkins and kitchen towels. Handwoven always includes projects … [more]
