LYS Day 2024!

We’re looking forward to Local Yarn Store Day, this Saturday, April 27th. Come to our shop on LYS Day for 25% off featured yarns!

LYS Day is about celebrating brick-and-mortar yarn shops and appreciating all that they offer. Here at the Hillsborough Yarn Shop, we are proud of our selection of high quality yarns, books and tools, and our customer service. Our mission is to provide knitters and other fiber artists with quality materials and help connect them with the knowledge they need to make things they’re proud of.

All the yarn in our shop is sorted by gauge, with sections marked Lace weight, Worsted weight, Bulky weight, and so on. We hope this makes it easier to sort through our robust selection to find the yarn that’s right for your project! For LYS Day, we’re offering 25% off one featured yarn in each gauge section:

You can read about all our featured yarns on the links above, and look for the yellow signs to find them here at the shop on LYS Day!

Come by the Hillsborough Yarn Shop this Saturday to celebrate LYS Day and get some great deals! We’re open from 11 am – 5:30 pm; see you at the shop!

A reminder: all discounted yarns are final sale, no returns or exchanges. Discount applies only to in-stock items, no special orders. Thanks for understanding!

Back in stock: Binkwaffle bags.

I’m so happy to report that Binkwaffle bags are back in stock, in small and large sizes and some new fabrics, too! I can hardly believe it’s been less than a year since we found out about Binkwaffle bags and started carrying them here at the shop; they’ve so quickly become a staple. We’ve sold … [more]

Hello, Fibre Company Canopy Fingering.

Time to meet another new-to-us yarn from the Fibre Company! Say hello to Canopy Fingering. Canopy Fingering is a finer version of Canopy Worsted, composed of the same luxurious blend of alpaca, merino wool, and bamboo. These fibers combine to create a yarn that is smooth and round, soft and drapey, with excellent stitch definition … [more]

Our new ballwinder.

Yarns that come in twisted hanks need to be wound into a ball before use, a task that some knitters find pleasure in, but others consider a chore. We have a swift and ballwinder here at the shop to make quick work of that task, and we’re happy to do it for you. For years, our heavy duty … [more]

Hello, Fibre Company Road to China Lace.

We didn’t hold back when we visited the Fibre Company booth at TNNA this year. Not only did we order their newest yarn, Cumbria, we also picked up two other Fibre Company yarns that are new to the Hillsborough Yarn Shop. Meet Road to China Lace. Road to China Lace is a 2 ply lace weight blend … [more]

Show and tell, and lots of it.

One of our greatest joys as yarn-shopkeepers is seeing what knitters, crocheters, and weavers make with our yarns. I’m always collecting photos of finished projects as they come through the shop for show and tell, letting them build up until I have enough for good-sized blog post. There have been so many exciting new yarns at … [more]

Hello, Fibre Company Cumbria.

Another new Fall yarn has found a home here at the Hillsborough Yarn Shop! Meet Cumbria, from the Fibre Company. Cumbria is a soft and sturdy worsted weight yarn, composed of 60% merino wool, 30% masham wool, and 10% mohair. The soft white merino is blended with the dark gray masham, creating a natural heathered … [more]

Hello, Malabrigo Mora.

Not long after our recent Malabrigo restock, we received another little box from Malabrigo. Say hello to their newest yarn, Mora. Mora is a 2 ply fingering weight yarn composed of 100% silk, which explains its soft, smooth hand, and deeply saturated hand-dyed colors. Each 50 gram skein has about 225 yards, enough for a small … [more]

Knit.purl.

The Fall/Winter 2015 issue of knit.purl is here! Fall knitting magazines seem to be all about sweaters, and this one is no exception. It features a collection of patterns inspired by menswear, including a colorwork yoke cardigan knit in Berroco Ultra Alpaca. I spotted a sweater in Baa Ram Ewe’s newest yarn, Dovestone DK, coming to the … [more]

Back in stock: Malabrigo Rios.

The July sale put a big dent in our inventory of Malabrigo Rios. It’s no surprise so many knitters took the opportunity to stock up at a discount; Rios is beautifully hand-dyed in rich, memorable colors, soft and springy in the hand, and machine-washable, no less. We’re delighted to have bunches more of the stuff on … [more]

Back in stock: Swans Island Natural Colors Merino Fingering.

Swans Island Natural Colors Merino Fingering has been a favorite yarn from the moment it first arrived at the shop, back in 2011. It’s been so well-loved, in fact, that our basket of the stuff began to empty once again last month, leaving us with a paltry palette of just eight-or-so colors. Our recent Swans Island … [more]
