LYS Day 2024!

We’re looking forward to Local Yarn Store Day, this Saturday, April 27th. Come to our shop on LYS Day for 25% off featured yarns!

LYS Day is about celebrating brick-and-mortar yarn shops and appreciating all that they offer. Here at the Hillsborough Yarn Shop, we are proud of our selection of high quality yarns, books and tools, and our customer service. Our mission is to provide knitters and other fiber artists with quality materials and help connect them with the knowledge they need to make things they’re proud of.

All the yarn in our shop is sorted by gauge, with sections marked Lace weight, Worsted weight, Bulky weight, and so on. We hope this makes it easier to sort through our robust selection to find the yarn that’s right for your project! For LYS Day, we’re offering 25% off one featured yarn in each gauge section:

You can read about all our featured yarns on the links above, and look for the yellow signs to find them here at the shop on LYS Day!

Come by the Hillsborough Yarn Shop this Saturday to celebrate LYS Day and get some great deals! We’re open from 11 am – 5:30 pm; see you at the shop!

A reminder: all discounted yarns are final sale, no returns or exchanges. Discount applies only to in-stock items, no special orders. Thanks for understanding!

Knits at Home, Knits of Tomorrow.

Two new books have made themselves at home on the teacart of late. They share a publisher, a craft, and project category–Interweave Press, knitting, and home decor–but they differ greatly in their aesthetic. One has “modern” in its subtitle and the other, “retro.” Curious? Take a look. Ruth Cross’s Knits at Home: Rustic Designs for … [more]

Show and tell: stoles, shawls, and scarves.

Here’s another group of beautiful finished knits from our friends and clients, brought gleefully into the shop for show and tell.   Kathie came in recently wearing a completed Stole made in the delightful Isager Alpaca 2. She had so enjoyed the project that she came back to get enough yarn for a second Stole … [more]

Vogue Knitting.

The Spring/Summer 2013 issue of Vogue Knitting has arrived at the shop, the latest in a recent flurry of new magazines. This issue is full of fashion-forward knits, as usual; bold garments in black and white are featured, as are warm-weather garments and lace patterns.   There’s also a nice piece on tubular cast-ons and … [more]

Back in stock: Habu cashmere.

I’m happy to report that we have reordered Habu N-86 2/26 Cashmere, a lace weight yarn made of 100% cashmere. Since it first arrived back in August, it has been petted, admired, and then it quietly sold out, one soft, tiny skein at a time. One day we turned around and there were only five … [more]

Two new colors in Titus.

As soon as we learned that Yorkshire yarn company Baa Ram Ewe had begun producing new colors of their well-loved yarn, Titus, we ordered some for the shop. Say hello to Titus Light and Titus Dark. All three shades of Titus share a common gauge and fiber content: fingering weight, and comprised of 50% Grey … [more]

Interweave Knits.

The latest issue of Interweave Knits is here, ushering in the next season: Spring 2013. As I paged through it, I noticed a handful of garments and accessories made in familiar yarns–yarns that can be found at the Hillsborough Yarn Shop. A cowl in Classic Elite Firefly, a pair of fingerless gloves in Malabrigo … [more]

Vintage and Bargello knits: more new books.

Two more new books have arrived at the shop since last I rounded them up. Vintage Design Workshop, by Geraldine Warner, teaches how to update vintage knitting patterns as well as how to customize contemporary patterns to create a vintage look. It’s not a collection of retro patterns, but rather a series of tutorials on … [more]

Show and tell: sweaters, shawl, and socks.

It’s been a while since I’ve done a “show and tell” post, not because there’s nothing to show or tell, but because my camera is not always handy when some finished piece is held out for Anne and I to admire. I’d like to photograph them all; here are the few I’ve captured of late. … [more]
