“Nasrin” in Camper, Loft, and Tones Light.

“Nasrin” is a colorwork sweater by Isabell Kraemer, and the subject of Anne’s upcoming class, which starts Saturday, May 18.

She’s knitting hers with Kelbourne Woolens Camper, a soft fingering weight wool in heathered colors, and an excellent choice for colorwork.

You can choose between the “solid” or “outlined” colorwork motif at the yoke; both charts are included in the pattern. A high contrast color combination shows the pattern best, in my opinion – here are some ideas in Camper!

I also like the idea of flipping the color arrangement so that the main color is dark, and the contrast color at the yoke is light.

Brooklyn Tweed Loft is another yarn that seems designed with colorwork in mind, a woolen-spun fingering weight wool with a bit more structure than Camper.

Loft plays well with Brooklyn Tweed’s other fingering weight yarn, Tones Light – which has a much more vibrant color palette!

Look for all of these and many others in the fingering weight section here at our shop, and read more about Anne’s class if you’re inspired to make a “Nasrin” of your own!

Quaking Aspen shawl.

I wrote a few days ago about a new yarn in the shop, the Fibre Company’s Acadia, and mentioned a shawl in the making with said yarn. I’m back now to report that the Quaking Aspen shawl is blocked and sitting happily in a basket at the shop with Acadia. Have a look. The Quaking … [more]

Show and tell: blanket, shawl, and sweater.

The last three show and tell photos I’ve collected at the shop have been large-scale projects, long haul knits whose completion is cause for excitement. That excitement made its way to the shop to be shared with us, and now I’ll pass it along to you. Betsy has been working on a lace patterned blanket … [more]

Back in stock: Jitterbug.

A recent special order for Colinette Jitterbug yarn in the bright red “Vatican Pie” colorway gave us an excuse to restock some of the most popular colors of this springy superwash sock yarn. These colorways are made memorable by their quirky names and vibrant hues: “Salted Caper,” “Lobster Pinch,” “Velvet Damask,” and the like. Anne … [more]

Hello, Acadia.

We are happy to announce that we now carry the Fibre Company’s Acadia. Acadia is a dk weight yarn made of merino wool, alpaca, and silk. The silk fiber takes the dye differently than wool and alpaca, and stands out from those fibers, creating a tweedy, rustic look. The feel of this yarn is far from … [more]

Interweave Knits.

The Winter 2012 issue of Interweave Knits is a pretty one, cozy with cables and colorwork, full of patterns for sweaters and cold-weather accessories. One of these patterns, Cirilia Rose’s “Horseshoe Janie,” calls for Schulana Lambswool, a Hillsborough Yarn Shop favorite. Find Interweave Knits among the newest magazines and books on the teacart.

Hello, Alchemy.

We are delighted to announce that we now carry two Alchemy yarns: Silken Straw and Sanctuary. Before we went to market in June, looking for new yarns to bring into the shop, a friend pointed us to Alchemy, a company known for their exquisitely hand-dyed silks and silk blends. That recommendation along with Clara Parkes’ … [more]

Another knit from Wearwithall.

Almost a year has passed since we received our first shipment of the glorious String Theory Selku, a sport weight blend of merino and silk, hand-dyed in vivid, memorable colorways. Almost a year, and yet I cast on for a shop sample in Selku only a fewweeks ago. Why the delay? There’s no real excuse, … [more]

New from Knitter’s Pride: Karbonz dpns.

Over the weekend, we received a shipment of brand new double pointed needles from Knitter’s Pride: Karbonz, so named for the carbon fiber they’re made of. Carbon fiber is smooth, lightweight, and strong enough to bend without breaking. The slight flexibility of carbon fiber allows Knitter’s Pride to produce these needles in teeny tiny sizes … [more]

Swans Island Trunk Show.

The Swans Island Trunk Show is here! For the next couple of weeks, we have sweaters, accessories, a baby blanket, and the incredible Swans Island Coat on loan from Swans Island. Most of these are made in their Organic Merino Worsted, and some in Organic Merino Fingering. Both yarns make soft fabric that drapes beautifully, … [more]

Amimono: the Bird/Little Bird Collection.

Yesterday a box from Isager arrived, bearing not only the usual few bags of Isager yarns that needed restocking, but also the newest pattern collection from Danish designer Helga Isager. This is Helga Isager’s fourth Amimono booklet, comprised of two pattern collections: the Bird Collection has garments and accessories for women, and the Little Bird Collection … [more]
