Show and tell.

It’s time again for show-and-tell! We’re fortunate to see many knit and crochet projects come through the shop, and when I’m able, I like to photograph them and share them here on the blog. René brought in her “Celeste,” a beautiful beaded lace shawl knit in Swans Island Organic Merino Fingering. René designed, named, and knit … [more]

On needle-felting.

Last week, as she prepared for a trip to New York for her granddaughter’s birthday, Anne began a new project. Our sweet Romney Ridge Farm needle-felting kits caught her eye, and thinking of her granddaughter, Anne began crafting these little woolen critters. The kits come with roving, felting needles, and detailed instructions to make the … [more]

Cliff hat colorways.

Our recent Shibui Mix Party resulted in a large Shibui order, which brought not only a new Shibui yarn, but plenty of new colors in Cima, Pebble, and Silk Cloud. As I put out the new colors, I often arrange them in a spectrum, play with color combinations, and generally admire the stuff. Thinking of … [more]

Two new classes.

Marsha recently brought in two new knit samples, demonstrating techniques and projects she’ll teach in upcoming classes. The “Waterhouse Mitts” class will teach stranded two-color knitting, following this free pattern from Ravelry. This one was knit with Marion Foale 3-ply Wool and Sandnes Garn Sisu, two fingering weight yarns in high-contrast colors. Above is the … [more]

Show and tell: baby things and cowls.

I’m always collecting photos of the beautiful finished pieces knitters and crocheters bring in to share with us, garments that started their lives as HYS yarns. Time for another round of show-and-tell! Paula knit this baby vest in Swans Island Organic Washable DK, a semisolid merino wool, making for a brighter version of the sample … [more]

Shibui Trunk Show!

We’re delighted to announce that we’re hosting a Shibui Trunk Show, featuring 6 garments and accessories knit in Shibui yarns. Shibui yarns are designed to be knit on their own or held together, using two or three strands at a time to make bespoke yarn blends. We currently stock three Shibui yarns, all lace weight: Cima, Pebble, … [more]

More show and tell: sweaters and vests.

As promised, here’s a second installment of show and tell, all sweaters and vests that started as yarns at the Hillsborough Yarn Shop. Beth and her husband came in to show off the sweater she knit for him in Plymouth Tweed. After solving a sizing conundrum and learning how to install a zipper, Beth was … [more]

Show and tell: accessories.

I’ve seen so many amazing finished garments come through the shop since I last wrote a “show and tell” blog post, especially on the recent Triangle Yarn Crawl, to which so many shoppers wore their handmade best. I can’t always have my camera handy to document the projects that knitters and crocheters create with yarn from … [more]

Zigzag Cowl Knit-Along.

Last Spring, we had two Knit-Alongs at the shop: first we knit up the summery “Gemini” tee, and then we made “Hexagonal Market Bags.” Halfway through March, sick of freezing rain and snow, we’ve decided we’re ready for another warm-weather Knit-Along. Inspired by the latest new yarn at the shop, Anne, Rosi and I have … [more]

Sonetto shawl.

Last week, Amy brought in this new shop sample: the “Sonetto” shawl, knit in two shades of Fibre Company Meadow. “Sonetto” is an asymmetric triangular shawl pattern suitable for new lace knitters, and one whose size is easy to adjust depending upon preference, or amount of yarn. It’s cast on at one point of the … [more]
