Learn the basics of stranded colorwork or refine your technique as you knit Gudrun Johnston’s “Shetland Solstice” hat. While designed for Jamieson’s Shetland Spindrift, any fingering weight wool will work, and we have many delightful yarns to select from. This 5-color hat is knit in the round with no more than 2 colors in each row. This class will focus on how to knit with 2 colors at once. We will also discuss reading colorwork charts, joining colors, catching floats, and darning in ends. In class, we will practice the German twisted cast on and making pompoms.

Experience: Students should be comfortable casting on, knitting, purling, and working in the round.

Materials needed:

• “Shetland Solstice” pattern, by Gudrun Johnston, available on Ravelry
• For practice during first class: 2 colors of yarn and appropriate-sized needles for working with that yarn
• For project: Fingering weight wool in 5 colors; we recommend Jamieson’s Shetland Spindrift or Kelbourne Woolens Camper – look for color ideas on our blog!
• Needles: 16″ US 2.5 (3mm), 16″ US 4 (3.5 mm), and double pointed US 4 (3.5mm); or size needed to get gauge
• Notions: stitch markers, needle for weaving in ends

Wednesdays: April 3, 17, and May 8; 5:45-7:45 pm.

Learn to knit socks with a simple free pattern, “Rye Light,” by Tin Can Knits. “Rye Light” is knit from the cuff down on double pointed needles and features a simple rib, garter stitch and stockinette leg, and heel flap. In the first class, Anne will guide students through pattern reading, sock construction, and casting on; homework will be to knit through completion of the heel flap. The second class will cover the heel and gusset; completing the foot will be the homework. The final class will cover the decreases and kitchener stitch that close the toe.

Experience: Students should be comfortable knitting and purling; knitting in the round is helpful.  Students should plan to complete homework (knitting) between classes.

Materials:

• “Rye Light,” by Tin Can Knits – available as a free download from Ravelry
• Fingering weight sock yarn, 120-480 yards depending on what size you choose. The pattern has multiple sizes ranging from baby to large adult; reference the pattern for detailed yardage info.
• Double pointed needles in US size 1 (2.25mm) and 2 (2.75mm)
• Notions: one stitch marker, tapestry needle for kitchener stitching the toe.

Wednesday evenings, May 1 and May 15, 2024, from 5:45 pm – 7:15 pm

Join Anne in knitting the “Ardelle” hat, a quick knit in bulky weight yarn with a cable pattern around the brim. The cabled band is knit flat, the provisional cast on grafted to the working yarn, then stitches are picked up to work the rest of the hat in the round. Anne will teach a provisional cast-on, how to cable, graft, pick up stitches, join to knit in the round, and work on double pointed needles for the crown of the hat. Students should come knowing how to knit, purl, cast on, and bind off.

Materials needed:

• “Ardelle” hat pattern by Ellen Bartz, available as a free download on Ravelry
• ~130 yards of bulky weight yarn, like Malabrigo Mecha, Kelbourne Woolens Germantown Bulky, Ewe Ewe Baa Baa Bulky and more
• US #9 double pointed needles
• Waste yarn for provisional cast-on
• Crochet hook for provisional cast-on
• Tapestry needle for grafting
• Cable needle is optional; Anne will teach using a double point as a cable needle
