Sale of the Week: Brooklyn Tweed Ranch 02!

Though we have to keep our doors closed during April, we’re still virtually open for mail orders, and we want to offer something fun during this uncertain time. Throughout April, we’ll have a special sale each week – 15% off a featured yarn, our Sale of the Week!

Our next Sale of the Week is 15% off Brooklyn Tweed Ranch 02, from April 8 – 14!

Ranch 02 is a worsted weight, woolen-spun, limited edition, ranch-specific Rambouillet yarn, which means every fiber in these skeins was sourced from a single flock of sheep living on Forbes Ranch in Kaycee, Wyoming. From there, the wool was scoured at Bollman Industries in Texas, spun at Crescent Woolen Mill in Wisconsin, and dyed at Caledonian Dye Works in Pennsylvania.

The 10-color palette is inspired by the landscape of northern Wyoming, and the sheep that roam the land. This 3 ply yarn is nice and round, and shows texture beautifully. That and its bouncy elasticity make it great fun to knit with, springy and light in the hand, making a soft, cohesive fabric.

Each 50 gram skein of Ranch 02 has 102 yards, and usually costs $16. For this week, it’s 15% off, which comes to $13.60 per skein. 2 skeins makes a hat, 7 skeins makes a shawl, and 10-19 makes a sweater.

Show and tell: Brooklyn Tweed Loft.

Time for another round of show and tell! We love to see what you all are making with yarn from our shop, and when I’m able, I take pictures so that I can share those projects here on the blog. Looking over my current collection of show and tell photos, I spotted a handful in Brooklyn Tweed Loft, which has been featured in our BT Sample of the Month throughout March. With its heathered colors and rustic texture, Loft is worth celebrating – here are a few great ways to use it!

Kathryn designed and knit this “Bradshaw” cardigan for her son using Brooklyn Tweed Loft. This lightweight, woolen spun yarn beautifully shows the cables and gives this sweater a classic look. The pattern comes in a wide range of sizes, covering 0-6 months up to 10 years.

Above is Sidney’s “Perch,” designed by Gudrun Johnston, a triangular half hap featuring “old shale,” a classic lace pattern. I’m always pleased by the flecks of color that pop out of Loft when its knit up – in this case, they’re bright and festive against the overall dark brown color of the yarn.

Nancy knit Bristol Ivy’s “Bayard” hat with two shades of Loft, a high contrast color combination that blurs and blends a bit in one-row stripes and slipped stitches.

Our latest trunk show from Brooklyn Tweed arrived just before we decided it was safest to temporarily close the shop to walk-in traffic. Anne and I are still coming into the shop to fill mail orders, so we get to enjoy these gorgeous garments, but we are truly sorry that most of you have missed seeing them! Brooklyn Tweed Sample of the Month: Voe colorways.

Gudrun Johnston’s “Voe” is our current featured sample from Brooklyn Tweed, and we’re offering BT Loft at 10% off throughout the month!

This colorwork pullover is knit with three shades of Loft, a light, medium, and dark – Snowbound, Faded Quilt, and Old World, respectively. With 45 colors to choose from, it’s great fun to pick a trio for “Voe,” if also a bit dizzying – here are a few I came up with to get you started.

New colors in Brooklyn Tweed Arbor.

Brooklyn Tweed recently released three new shades in Arbor, and we’re happy to have them here at the shop!

Brooklyn Tweed Arbor is a 3-ply DK weight yarn composed of 100% Targhee wool. Like Brooklyn Tweed Vale and Peerie, it’s worsted-spun, and skein-dyed in solid colors.

If these new colors look familiar, it’s because they’re available in other Brooklyn Tweed yarns. Seaglass and Burnished have been popular shades in Peerie, and Spruce is nearly identical to Lodgepole Pine, a popular color in Ranch 02. We’re delighted to see these colors added to the Arbor palette!

Worsted-spun yarns are more durable and dense than their woolen-spun counterparts, and have sharper stitch definition for crisp cables, lace, and texture patterns. Targhee wool spun in this manner has an abundance of one of my favorite yarn characteristics: elasticity. Garments knit with Arbor should wear well and look sharp for years to come.

Brooklyn Tweed Sample of the Month: Voe.

Our Brooklyn Tweed Sample of the Month for March is here! Come by this month to see “Voe.”

Designed by Gudrun Johnston for Brooklyn Tweed Loft, “Voe” is a colorwork yoke pullover worked from the bottom up – a style, technique, and construction that I count among my personal favorites.

Loft is a fingering weight, woolen-spun Targhee-Columbia wool. Loft is named for one of its best qualities, which makes it somewhat delicate, but especially warm for its weight. The rustic texture and heathered shades make it an ideal yarn for colorwork, which is apparent in this garment.

Show and tell: Brooklyn Tweed Peerie.

Time for another round of show and tell! We love to see what you all are making with yarn from our shop, and when I’m able, I take pictures so that I can share those projects here on the blog. Looking over my current collection of show and tell photos, I spotted three in Brooklyn Tweed Peerie, which is currently 10% off as it’s featured in our BT Sample of the Month. With its soft hand, bold colors, and superb stitch definition, Peerie is worth celebrating – here are a few great ways to use it!

Above is Pam’s “Butterfly / Papillon,” a striking shawl decorated with short rows, which she knit using six shades of Peerie.

Emily was in a mood for colorwork one day, and came by the shop to select an open-ended palette of Peerie for hat-making. She wound up knitting two “Lucerne” hats and a “Bousta Beanie,” two of our favorite fingering weight colorwork hat patterns. These are great fun, whether you’re trying stranded knitting for the first time or just in a colorwork mood, like Emily!

Margaretta has worked with Peerie several times now, coming back again and again for the smoothness, bounce, and stitch definition.

This is her “Ensata Scarf,” rich with twisted stitches, texture, and lace, all of which shine in this special yarn.

Brooklyn Tweed Sample of the Month: Orime.

Our Brooklyn Tweed Sample of the Month for February is here! Come by this month to see “Orime.”

“Orime” is a short sleeved top designed by Veronik Avery for BT Early Fall 2018. It features knit stitches arranged diagonally on a background of reverse stockinette, a folded collar and neckline facing for structure and a professional look.

Show and tell: blankets.

Time for another round of show and tell! I love to take photos of finished projects when folks bring them into the shop to share with us, and to share them here on our blog. I always seem to have a backlog of photos, thanks to the many productive knitters and crocheters who frequent our shop. Here’s a batch of show and tell featuring those most ambitious of projects – blankets!

Above is Nancy’s “Karoo Vintage” blanket, a magnum opus of colorful crochet. She used a variety of yarns, all plant fibers – Cascade Ultra Pima, Universal Bamboo Pop, Shibui Rain, Tahki Cotton Classic, and others. Bravo, Nancy!

The next two blankets come from a different Nancy, one who prefers to knit. Above is her “Tweed Baby Blanket,” knit with Brooklyn Tweed Shelter in a pleasing gradient of red and pink.

Nancy also made this “Umaro” baby blanket with Brooklyn Tweed Arbor. The simplicity of white brings clarity to this incredible stitch pattern. Nancy was generous enough to create this blanket for the shop as a sample – don’t miss admiring it next time you’re in!

Amy also completed an “Umaro” blanket recently, using Brooklyn Tweed Quarry held double. This intricate stitch pattern looks entirely new at such a large gauge.

Amy has an “Umaro” class underway at the shop now, and we’re so looking forward to seeing all the cozy blankets that come out of it!

By Hand Lookbook No. 11: Vermont and New Hampshire.

The latest volume of By Hand is here!

By Hand is a series of lookbooks where each issue focuses on a city or region. The subject matter is the makers of that community, the designers, hand-dyers, and fiber artists that both shape and draw inspiration from the place they call home.

Vermont and New Hampshire are the focus of this issue, and By Hand introduces us to the yarn makers, fiber farmers, yarn shops, textile artists, and weavers who live and work there. Some we’re familiar with, like Harrisville Designs, where Brooklyn Tweed yarns are milled, and some are new to us.

Along with maker profiles and knitting patterns, By Hand also features recipes and other crafty projects.

So many of us partake in a variety of handiwork, though we may call one or another a favorite; it’s nice to see a diversity of interests on display in this publication.
