The newest issue of Laine Magazine is here with a fresh new look, and two covers to choose from!

Laine Magazine is a publication out of Finland, a knitting and lifestyle magazine with a love of natural fibers as its focus, and a reputation for beautiful designs and artful photography.

This autumn issue is packed with inspiring sweater designs and all kinds of techniques – brioche, colorwork, cables, bobbles, and lace.

Laine’s redesign brings three new columns – Jeanette Sloan Talks Fibre, Päivi Kankaro’s Five Ways, and Where I Knit, a regular piece that pictures people knitting in their favorite spot, and talking about crafting in their everyday lives.

Let’s peek inside the newest book from Laine!

Traditions Revisited: Modern Estonian Knits is designer Aleks Byrd’s introduction to Estonian knitting techniques, a collection of richly textured garments and accessories.

Knitted fringe, braids, and bobbles adorn these colorful pieces, along with twisted stitches and roosimine, an Estonian inlay technique that creates the look of embroidery.

This issue is inspired by Nordic summer nights, reflected in lightweight garments and accessories.

Show and tell: for Anne’s grandchildren.

Earlier this year, Anne set a lofty goal: she would knit a sweater for each of her five grandchildren for Hanukkah. When she mentioned this in conversation at the shop, eyes would widen in disbelief – even child-sized sweaters represent an awful lot of knitting, after all. For her granddaughters, she picked Anna Johanna’s “Taimi,” pattern, a colorwork yoke pullover from Strands of Joy, and for her grandsons, “Fresko,” a cabled pullover. She spent every possible moment knitting these sweet sweaters, determined to complete them in time. Anne is a woman of her word, and a determined one – even with this year’s early Hanukkah, she completed the five sweaters in time. Quite a feat!

Above is a close up on a heartfelt detail – Anne ordered custom tags on Etsy for these heirloom knits, reading “Made with love by Bubbie.”

Silk Mohair + fingering weight.

We’ve seen so many patterns lately that call for a lace weight mohair paired with fingering weight wool – sometimes solid, sometimes variegated, always creating an enticing fuzzy fabric. Isager Silk Mohair is just the yarn for this, and we’ve got loads of options in the fingering weight section here at our shop – you’ll find a few ideas below, and keep scrolling for patterns!

Hello, Isager Silk Mohair!

We are delighted to announce a new arrival at the Hillsborough Yarn Shop: meet Isager Silk Mohair!

Isager Silk Mohair:

  • lace weight
  • 70% kid mohair, 30% silk
  • 233 yards/25 g
  • $16 each

Isager is a Danish yarn company led by designers and co-owners Marianne Isager and her daughter, Helga Isager. They are known for combining yarns to create unique fiber and color blends, and for their sophisticated color palette.

Silk Mohair is soft and shiny, lightweight with a fluffy texture, and often used in tandem with heavier yarns. We’ve seen more and more patterns calling for a lace weight mohair like this one, sometimes paired with a fingering weight yarn, sometimes a bulky – stay tuned for more blog posts on how to pair it up! Til then, here are a few ideas for using Silk Mohair on its own, or combined with other lace weight yarns.

The newest issue of Laine Magazine is here!

Laine Magazine is a publication out of Finland, a knitting and lifestyle magazine with a love of natural fibers as its focus, and a reputation for beautiful designs and tantalizing photography.

Issue 12 features patterns from an amazing group of designers, the likes of Olga Buraya-Kefelian, Kristin Drysdale, Tamy Gore, Jeanette Sloan, and more.

I spotted a few familiar yarns among these designs, the kind of rustic wool that Anne and I have such a soft spot for – here’s the toothy Isager Jensen in a dramatic cable and drop stitch yoke by Olga Buraya-Kefelian, followed by Kristin Drysdale’s colorwork pullover in Tukuwool Fingering.

We love super soft fibers, too, of course – how about Shibui Haven, a merino/cashmere blend? Dee Hardwicke has put it to use in a colorwork cowl and mitt set, below.

Hello, Neighborhood Fiber Co.!

We are thrilled to announce that we are now stockists for Neighborhood Fiber Co.!

Neighborhood Fiber Co. was founded by Karida Collins, a dyer and designer based in Baltimore, MD. The company is so-called because Collins’ 70+ colorways are all inspired by and named for the urban neighborhoods and landscapes in and around Baltimore and Washington, DC.

Along with their unique and vibrant colorways, we also admire Neighborhood’s commitment to environmentally-sound practices, justice, equality, and empowerment. In 2020, Collins created the NFC Momentum Fund, a donor-advised charitable fund that has distributed more than $50k in grants to community organizations in the Baltimore community.

Our first Neighborhood Fiber Co. yarn is Studio Sock, a soft, sturdy, tightly plied organic merino wool that’s machine washable for easy care.

Laine’s popular 52 Weeks of Socks is now out in paperback!

This tome includes 52 patterns for knitting socks and slippers, an astonishingly large collection, and a beautiful one. You can see them all on Ravelry, a virtual way to browse the book; the list of designers is impressive, including Joji Locatelli, Isabell Kraemer, Dawn Henderson, Paula Pereira, Rachel Coopey, Andrea Mowry, and Caitlin Hunter.

52 Weeks of Socks is heavy with inspiring patterns using a variety of techniques, but it is also a beautiful object unto itself. Like all Laine publications, the photography is tantalizing, the color palette soothing and evocative.
