Modern Daily Knitting Field Guide No. 21: Brioche.

The twenty first installment of the Modern Daily Knitting Field Guide series is here!

MDK’s series of Field Guides are pocket-sized booklets focused on a particular theme, knitting technique, or designer. This newest Field Guide is an introduction to brioche, featuring designs by master of the technique, Nancy Marchant – let’s take a look inside!

Brioche is a dimensional stitch pattern often worked in two colors, which creates a bouncy, reversible fabric. Marchant’s “Cushiest Cowl” is a perfect introduction to the basics of 2-color brioche, and the patterns that follow build on these skills.

Most of these patterns call for MDK’s new yarn, which we don’t have on our shelves, though our worsted weight section is full of lovely substitutes. Think Brooklyn Tweed Tones, Shelter or Ranch 02, Kelbourne Woolens Germantown, and Malabrigo Rios.

The latest book from Laine Publishing is here – let’s look at Worsted: a Knitwear Collection Curated by Aimée Gille of La Bien Aimée!

Aimée Gille is the dyer behind La Bien Aimée, and for this collection, she reached out to designers with a wide range of aesthetics, whose work differs from one another and speaks to all kinds of knitters.

Many of these designers are well known, and the others are worth getting to know – Nadia Crétin-Léchenne, Stephen West, Sylvia Watts-Cherry, Andrea Mowry, Tif Neilan, Saysha Greene, Norah Gaughan, Maxim Cyr, Nancy Marchant and Thien-Kieu Lam. She asked them to create sweaters and accessories in her new Corrie Worsted yarn, and what they’ve come up with is inspiring and varied, indeed!

While we don’t carry La Bien Aimée Corrie Worsted, we have so many lovely substitutes in our worsted weight section: Brooklyn Tweed Shelter and Tones, Kelbourne Woolens Germantown, Malabrigo Rios, Fibre Co. Cumbria Worsted, Berroco Ultra Alpaca, Plymouth Galway, Ewe Ewe Wooly Worsted, and more.

Laine Magazine, No. 7.

A beautiful new issue of Laine Magazine just arrived – let’s look inside issue No. 7.

Laine Magazine is a publication out of Finland, a knitting and lifestyle magazine with a love of natural fibers and handicraft as its focus. It’s only a couple of years old, but it already has quite a following, and a reputation for beautiful designs and tantalizing photography.

Inside this issue of Laine, you’ll find knitting patterns from Nancy Marchant, Stephen West, Kristin Drysdale, Carol Feller, and others, profiles on designer Veera Välimäki and the Fibre Company, and a travel guide to London.

One of the standout designs of this issue, in my opinion, is Kristin Drysdale’s “Marit,” a steeked colorwork cardigan knit with Tukuwool Fingering. I’m only able to resist casting on right away because I’m currently knitting a steeked colorwork cardigan with Tukuwool Fingering!

Last week, we welcomed another beautiful new issue of Laine Magazine.

Laine Magazine is a publication out of Finland, a knitting and lifestyle magazine with a love of natural fibers and handicraft as its focus. It’s only a couple of years old, but it already has quite a following, and a reputation for beautiful designs and tantalizing photography.

Inside this issue of Laine, you’ll find a mix of knitting patterns, articles, recipes, profiles on fiber artists, and a travel guide to Reykjavik.

There are lots of familiar names sprinkled throughout this issue, like Andrea Mowry, Tukuwool, Shannon Cook, Brooklyn Tweed, Nancy Marchant, and Fibre Company, but we love getting to know new designers and yarn companies through Laine, too.

Pom Pom Quarterly: Autumn 2017.

The Autumn 2017 issue of Pom Pom Quarterly is here!

This issue is guest-edited by designer and writer Juju Vail, and the themes and motifs throughout reflect her interest in a fully handmade wardrobe. In many cases, the knit garments are modeled with sewn garments Vail herself created.

Anna Maltz contributes an essay on slow fashion, a thought-provoking, political piece that critiques the class-signifying language around capsule wardrobes.

Paging through this cozy-looking issue, I spotted a few familiar yarns: Shibui Pebble and Silk Cloud in Nancy Marchant’s “Abusson” scarf, and Brooklyn Tweed Loft in Olga Buraya-Kefelian’s “Soumak” mitts.

Each issue of Pom Pom wraps up with a recipe of some kind, and this hot toddy perfectly suits the season. Here in North Carolina, it’s not quite hot toddy weather yet, but we keep telling ourselves: cool weather is coming!
