Back in stock: needle-felting kits.

For a couple of years now, we’ve carried needle felting kits from Romney Ridge Farm in Maine. Each kit has the instructions and materials needed to create tiny woolen creatures, and we try to have a nice selection of animals to choose from. Not long ago, we found ourselves without a single sheep kit, a problem that now is remedied.

Along with these sweet sheep, you’ll find kits for needle-felted bears, chickens, snowy owls, harbor seals, and others.

Last weekend, Anne plucked one of the fox kits off the shelf, and quietly needle-felted in between phone calls and customers checking out.

It wasn’t more than an hour and a half before this handsome fellow emerged.

Felted.

A new special issue from Interweave has found its way to the shop: take a peek inside Felted.

DSCN4756

Felted covers all manner of felt crafts, from needle felting and wet felting to stitching with felt, whether found or created.

DSCN4759

Some of these projects begin with yarn and knitting needles and are then wet-felted in the washing machine; others are constructed from woven Zoom Loom squares. Some begin with thrifted sweaters, mined for feltable knit fabric; others begin with ready-made felt fabric, or colorful wool roving. What they all have in common is felt, which is a sturdy compressed wool fabric full of possibilities.

On needle-felting.

Last week, as she prepared for a trip to New York for her granddaughter’s birthday, Anne began a new project.

Our sweet Romney Ridge Farm needle-felting kits caught her eye, and thinking of her granddaughter, Anne began crafting these little woolen critters.

The kits come with roving, felting needles, and detailed instructions to make the animals pictured.

In just one afternoon, Anne transformed these little puffs of wool roving into one songbird, then another, and finally a sheep.

Romney Ridge Farm Needle-Felting Kits.

At TNNA this past June, something unusual caught Anne’s eye: a collection of tiny needle-felted animals, made from wool roving. She was particularly taken with a little sheep, and spent one of our exhausted hotel-room evenings making one herself. Having never needle-felted before, and with written instructions alone, Anne created this little guy in about an hour.
