Back in stock: CoopKnits Socks Yeah!

Not long ago, we restocked CoopKnits Socks Yeah!, expanding the palette of that lovely yarn with colors old and new.

CoopKnits Socks Yeah:

  • fingering weight
  • 75% superwash merino wool, 25% nylon
  • 231 yards/50g
  • $11.60 each

Developed by avid sock-designer Rachel Coopey, CoopKnits Socks Yeah! is a hard-wearing, machine-washable sock yarn that comes in solid and heathered shades.

Seeking sock inspiration? We happen to have a fresh supply of Ready Set Socks, Coopey’s collaboration with Pom Pom Press. The patterns in Ready Set Socks are written for both fingering and DK weights, and are beautiful in their simplicity. This makes them a blank slate for modifications – the section on “Variations, Tutorials + Adjustments” will see you through different heels, cuffs, decreases, yarn and color choices, and more.

Pom Pom Quarterly: Winter 2023.

The penultimate issue of Pom Pom Quarterly is here!

We are so sad to hear that they’re closing up shop after the Spring 2024 issue comes out in January; PPQ has been an inspiring resource for so many years. In the meantime, this new Winter 2023 issue is full of artful and intriguing knits in monochrome colorways.

“We love colour so much that often we try and get as much of it into each piece as we can,” the PPQ editors write, “but for this monochrome-themed issue we wanted to see what could be done with fabrics that used more subtle tonal differences within a single hue, or closely related ones.”

Pom Pom has always been a champion of new and emerging designers and indie dyers, introducing us to new names with every issue. We don’t carry all the yarns shown in their pages, but we have many lovely substitutes and are happy to help you find just the right one for your project! Above are a few shades of Brooklyn Tweed Tones and Shelter, reminiscent of Catie Robbins’ intarsia “Redware” shawl.

The dimensional texture of Alessandra Gropazzi’s “Chiaroscuro” scarf caught my eye right away – it’s made with a fingering weight wool and lace weight mohair/silk blend held together throughout. Kelbourne Woolens Camper and Isager Silk Mohair fit the bill, and we have new colors in both of those yarns!

Sara Ottosson’s “Celadon” hat uses a fingering weight wool as a base yarn throughout, and alternates between two shades of fuzzy lace weight yarn to create a subtle colorwork pattern. We have so many yarns that would work well for this, but Ewe Ewe Fluffy Fingering and Fyberspates Cumulus have the perfect colors to match the pattern photo!

The latest issue of Pom Pom Quarterly is here!

This Autumn 2023 issue is guest edited by Candice English, of The Farmer’s Daughter Fibers in Montana. English brings a fresh perspective to PPQ 46, along with her distinctive aesthetic, drawing from both her Indigenous roots and life in the American West.

Bobbles, colorwork, cables and fringe adorn the sweaters and accessories within, the work of designers Tin Can Knits, Lindsay Fowler, Elena Solier Jansà, and others.

Pom Pom has always been an interdisciplinary magazine, featuring recipes and a variety of crafty tutorials alongside their knitting patterns. This issue includes profiles of Indigenous artists, and a piece from Blackfeet Elder, Pauline Matt (Candice’s Mother), who shares her traditional medicine rituals and a tea recipe.

Pom Pom Crochet Anthology.

The folks at Pom Pom Quarterly have put together a special edition especially for crocheters – let’s look inside their Crochet Anthology!

For a decade now, Pom Pom Quarterly has been sprinkling crochet patterns into their magazines, one or two in each issue. This special edition collects some of the best loved crochet patterns from their archives.

Isa Catepillán’s popular “Water Clover” graces the cover of this collection, an elegant lace tee with floral motifs crocheted with Kelbourne Woolens Mojave. Skipper would work well, too!

From lacy tops to snuggly cardigans, from textured hats to colorful shawls, from delicate lace weight up to cozy worsted weight, these projects are varied and inspiring.

The latest issue of Pom Pom Quarterly is here!

This vibrant summer issue is packed with warm weather garments for crocheters and knitters alike, all inspired by fruits.

The cover sweater, Ana D’s striking “Limonata,” is crocheted with Kelbourne Woolens Mojave, a sport weight blend of cotton and linen. The brand new KW Skipper would work, too! I also spotted Berroco Modern Cotton in this issue, Marzena Kołaczek’s “Guayaba” tee.

This 44th issue of PPQ is all about layering, in terms of clothing and how we dress for the unpredictable weather of spring, and in terms of transparency and opacity. The patterns in this collection all play with these themes, sometimes expanding the layering metaphor in other ways, as well.

Pom Pom always has interesting non-knitting content, as well – a piece by artist Mei Stephens on screen printing, and a cultural history of the color yellow by Hannah McGregor.

Ready Set Socks is here!

This new book from Pom Pom Press is all about sock knitting, complete with patterns, tutorials, and inspiring modifications.

Ready Set Socks is a follow-up to Pom Pom’s excellent beginner book, Knit How, and invites improving knitters to take another step forward in their knitting skills. The book is a collaboration with designer Rachel Coopey, who is known for her extensive portfolio of sock patterns as well as her CoopKnits sock yarns.

The patterns are written for both fingering and DK weights, and are beautiful in their simplicity. This makes them a blank slate for modifications – the section on “Variations, Tutorials + Adjustments” will see you through different heels, cuffs, decreases, yarn and color choices, and more.

The latest issue of Pom Pom Quarterly is here!

Abundance is the theme of this Autumn 2022 issue, expressed in plentiful cables, colors, and textures, all of which are showcased beautifully in the magazine’s new large format.

I spotted a few familiar yarns in this issue – Olivia Szepanik’s “Winnow” cardigan makes good use of Kelbourne Woolens Scout, one of our go-to sweater yarns in the DK weight section, and Maria Walters’ “Polonyna” pullover shines in fingering weight Jamieson’s Shetland Spindrift.

We may not have all the yarns shown in these patterns, but we love finding just the right substitute!

Pom Pom Quarterly: 10th Anniversary issue!

The 10th Anniversary issue of Pom Pom Quarterly has arrived here at the shop!

This unique new issue has a flip double cover, and the patterns within are divided between warm and cool weather garments and accessories.

PPQ has also switched to a larger format and increased the number of pages, so photos are bigger and instructions are easier to read.

Issue 41 features patterns by James N Watts, Sylvia Watts-Cherry, Dawn Henderson, Sari Nordlund, and more.

I love seeing almost every garment knit in multiple colorways, and shown on a few different models – it gives a sense of the enormous possibility that exists in each design.

As ever, there’s good reading material in this issue, too – an essay about cultural appropriate and Sashiko by Atsushi Futatsuya, a crafter’s guide to London, where Pom Pom was founded, and a thoughtful guide to yarn substitution.
