Going-to-Market Sale! Week 2.

Our three-week Going-to-Market sale continues! This week, we’re featuring select Berroco yarns at a 25% discount.

Tuesday June 5th – Sunday June 10th: Select Berroco yarns are 25% off!

  • Boho
  • Cotton Twist
  • Inca Gold
  • Jasper
  • Latitude
  • Linen Jeans
  • NaturLin
  • Pure Merino
  • Pure Pima
  • Touche

Come by the shop between Tuesday June 5th and Sunday June 10th to get these Berroco yarns at a 25% discount. We’ll have select Berroco pattern books at a discount, too. Most of these yarns are plant fibers, rather than animal fibers, so lovers of cotton, linen, and rayon will find some great deals for warm-weather knitting and crocheting. I’ve spent the last week knitting a few simple projects with these yarns, to give a sense of how they work up and what they’re good for. More on that soon. See you at the shop!

Just a reminder–all sales are final on sale items; there can be no exchanges, no returns, nor will we special order. Thanks!

Berroco Inca Gold and Jasper, on sale!

UPDATE: As of 11/19/2014, we are totally sold out of Berroco Inca Gold and Jasper!

*************************************************************

Last week, we were saddened to discover that Berroco has discontinued two of their yarns, Inca Gold and Jasper. Because we’re unable to continue carrying them, we’re now offering them at a discounted price.

Inca Gold is a springy blend of merino and silk coming in a lovely range of solid colors and boasting excellent stitch definition. At five stitches to the inch, it could be used for almost anything: hats, scarves, sweaters, vests, mitts, whatever. If you’ve been admiring a pattern that calls for worsted weight yarn, consider Inca Gold.

Jasper is a self-striping, single-ply merino in an aran weight. Like Inca Gold, Jasper is a very versatile yarn. Some of our knitters have used it for sweaters, and others have put it to good use in hats and scarves. This has been a popular yarn, and we’re sad to see it go. Come and get it while it’s still here, and know that we have sweater quantities of many colors!

Bergere de France Berlaine, on sale!

If you’ve been to the Hillsborough Yarn Shop, you’re probably already familiar with the sale trunk.

Just in front of the desk, a trunk overflows with discounted yarns. The contents of the trunk are ever-changing, and this week, we added something new: Bergere de France Berlaine, a dk weight superwash wool.

Most of the yarns in the sale trunk are dwindling in quantity, with only a handful of skeins in any one color. Not so for Berlaine–if there’s not enough for your project in the trunk, just ask us for more, and we’ll gladly check our stash in the back room. We may even have sweater quantities of this lovely stuff in a few colors, depending on the sweater. The machine-washability of this yarn makes it particularly well suited to children’s things, or the kinds of accessories that sometimes need to be thrown into the wash. Dig into the sale trunk, folks! There’s plenty of good, inexpensive yarn waiting there.

Happy birthday, Hillsborough Yarn Shop!

Five years ago today, Anne officially opened the Hillsborough Yarn Shop. For me, as well as for many others, the shop is more than a shop. It’s the reason I (re)learned to knit, a skill and passion that has become a very important part of my life. A Hillsborough native, I noticed the new business on Churton Street back in 2006 and thought: perhaps I’d like to knit? Five years later, I feel strange if a day goes by without at least a few knitted rows. The shop has since become many things to me: a source of inspiration, a place for meeting fascinating people, and (lucky me!) my job. A big, resounding thank you to Anne for the welcoming, inspiring space she’s created!

As Anne is quick to point out, our customers have at least as much to do with our success as she does. As a thank you to all of you, we’re having a sale and celebration this weekend. We’re offering a 15% discount on absolutely everything in the shop, with the exception of classes, and that which is already discounted. Come in anytime this Friday, Saturday or Sunday, October 21st, 22nd, or 23rd, and we’ll pour you a glass of champagne, offer you a cupcake, and take 15% off the price of your purchase. Looking forward to seeing you there!

A gentle reminder.

July is coming to a close, friends. The end of the month may mean many things to many people, but we can all come together on this one: the end of July brings the end of our July sale. I trust that you have all spent the last three weeks meticulously planning your next several knitting or crochet projects in order to save 15% on the yarn required to complete them. Right?

But really. There’s one week left in the month, and if you’d been planning to do a little sale-shopping, but put it on the back burner, it’s time to move it to the front. Hope to see you soon!

Hillsborough Yarn Shop’s Annual Summer Sale!

July is here again, and with it comes our annual summer sale: absolutely all of our yarns are 15% off during the month of July! Even that special skein whose temptation you’ve been resisting. Maybe it’s Kauni. Maybe it’s Schaefer. Maybe it’s Malabrigo. Maybe it’s yarn for a project you’ve been daydreaming about, say, a special sweater from Japanese Inspired Knits. Perhaps enough Marion Foale 3 ply to make one of the incredible sweaters from the Marion Foale book. Or maybe you just want to get a discounted price on the materials for your holiday gift-making. (To those of you who plan their holiday gift-making in July, I say: bravo! You are the ones who will finish on time!)

If ever you were to give in to tempting yarn, now is the time. See you at the shop!

(A reminder: there will be no returns or exchanges on sale yarns. Thanks!)

Surprise! One-Weekend Sale: Jo Sharp.

Our four-week series of Going-To-Market sales continues! Week Two: Jo Sharp. That means all our Jo Sharp yarns are 25% off, starting today and ending on Sunday, May 29th.

Our Jo Sharp yarns vary in weight, fiber, and texture:

  • Alpaca Kid Lustre: a DK weight blend of mohair, merino wool, and alpaca
  • Alpaca Silk Georgette: a sport weight blend of merino wool, alpaca, and silk
  • Classic Wool DK: a smooth DK weight wool
  • Silkroad Aran: a worsted weight blend of wool, silk, and cashmere
  • Silkroad Ultra: a bulky blend of wool, silk, and cashmere
  • Silkroad Aran Tweed: a soft worsted weight tweed, made of wool, silk, and cashmere
  • Silkroad DK Tweed: a soft DK weight tweed, made of wool, silk, and cashmere
  • Soho Summer Cotton DK: a silky 100% cotton in a DK weight
As wonderful as all of these yarns are, I’d like to make a personal recommendation: Jo Sharp Silkroad Tweed, either in the aran weight or the DK weight. I spent all day playing with this stuff. Not knitting, but organizing it, making sure all the colors were represented in the front and all our bins and bags of it were in order in the back. The better to fetch it for you, my friends, when you decide what color you want to make your next Silkroad Tweed sweater.
Look how happy all those Aran colors are together, tucked into their basket.
It’s the DK weight, though, that I’m really taken with. As I counted, priced, and sorted them, I played with color combinations, as these colors beg to be combined. Stripes? Colorwork? I didn’t decide. I just played:

I recommend the tweeds not only because I myself like them, but because we have sweater quantities of most tweed colorways, making this one-weekend sale an excellent opportunity to get a good deal on a sweater’s worth of truly luxurious yarn. Come and take a look! And keep your eyes on the blog this time next week for another sale announcement.
(A reminder: there will be no returns or exchanges on sale yarns. Thanks!)

Surprise! One-Weekend Sale!

Each June, Anne makes a trip to the TNNA Summer NeedleArts Market to meet with distributors, looking at new yarns for the fall. As we prepare for her trip, we must make room for all the new yarn we plan to buy for the shop! For the next four weeks, we’ll be having one-weekend sales on select yarns. We’ll announce which yarns are discounted the Thursday before the sale, both on the Hillsborough Yarn Shop group on Ravelry and here on the blog. Make sure to check back for next week’s sale, and the next week, and the next…

This week:

Mission Falls baby sweaters.

Happy Mother’s Day, folks. Speaking of which: look at what’s hanging in our window.

Two tiny baby sweaters, one in Mission Falls 1824 Cotton, and one in 1824 Wool. Perfect baby gifts for brand new mothers.

1824 Cotton.

As I mentioned before, the Mission Falls yarns are perfect for baby things. Each one is soft and machine-washable, and each comes in a range of subtle hues that look wonderful together. These sweaters, knit by myself and by Nancy, make for nice examples of the fine qualities of Mission Falls yarn. The fact that these two yarns are also currently on sale makes for another fine quality: these yarns are inexpensive.

1824 Wool.

The pattern is “Baby Sophisticate,” by Linden Down, a simple, well-written, free Ravelry download that calls for only three skeins of Mission Falls. Nancy and I both knit the 0-3 month size in only two skeins, making for incredibly quick knitting. If I had to make a gift for a baby in a hurry, I’d turn to this yarn and this pattern.

We’re busy cooking up a baby sweater class to take place sometime soon, for an intermediate knitter. If you’re interested, don’t hesitate to let us know. In the mean time, come by the shop to plan a Mission Falls baby sweater of your own!
