Araucania Coliumo: now on sale!

UPDATE: As of 4/22/2016, we are totally sold out of Araucania Coliumo!

*************************************************************

Another discontinued yarn has found its way to the sale trunk. We’re now offering Araucania Coliumo at over 35% off!

DSCN4110

Coliumo is a single-ply, super-bulky wool and silk blend, with 95 yards on each 100 gram skein, and a suggested gauge of 3 stitches per inch on a US #11 needle. One skein is enough for “An Unoriginal Hat” or “Anthro-tastic Headband,” while three or four skeins would make a cozy “GAP-tastic Cowl.” Come by soon to pick up some Coliumo before it disappears!

A reminder: all sales are final on discounted yarn. There can be no returns or exchanges, nor special orders–the discount applies only to what we currently have in stock. Thanks!

Araucania Panguipulli: now on sale!

UPDATE: As of 2/10/2015, we are totally sold out of Araucania Panguipulli!
*************************************************************

We are blown away by how quickly our latest sale yarn sold out–our entire stock of Berroco Peruvia was gone in less than a week! It left a hole in the sale trunk, which we promptly filled, of course.

DSCN4059

Araucania Panguipulli is an aran weight merino yarn that is both marled and variegated. It’s been discontinued, so we’re now offering our remaining stock of Panguipulli at over 35% off!

DSCN4060

Each 100 gram skein has 193 yards, with an expected gauge of 4 stitches per inch on a US #10 needle. This colorful stuff makes a great scarf, hat, cowl, or pair of mitts.

Sale yarns have been going very quickly lately… come by the shop soon to snag a few skeins of Araucania Panguipulli before it disappears!

Berroco Peruvia: now on sale!

UPDATE: As of 12/26/2014, we are totally sold out of Berroco Peruvia! *************************************************************

It’s always bittersweet news when yarns are discontinued. On the one hand, we’re sad to see good yarns go. On the other, we’re happy to announce that said yarn is now on sale. We’re now offering Berroco Peruvia at over 25% off!

DSCN4049

Peruvia is an aran weight single ply wool with 174 yards on each 100 gram skein. It’s fuzzy but sturdy, suitable for felting projects, and comes in a range of heathered shades. One skein is enough for a hat or a pair of mittens; a few more will make a scarf or shawlette.

New books.

It’s been a busy season for new books here at the shop. Every couple of days, I find myself once again rearranging the teacart to make room for another stack of books.

DSCN3838

The folks at Interweave have been particularly hard at work this fall, publishing a wide range of knitting books.

DSCN3558

DSCN3560

Some focus on particular styles or themes, like First Frost, Graphic Knits, and Knitting Wizardry, while others dive into a single technique or kind of garment, like No-Sew KnitsTwigg Stitch, and Fresh Knitted Accessories.

We also recently received Margaret Radcliffe’s newest book, The Knowledgeable Knitter, a compendium of tips and tricks for every stage of the knitting process. Radcliffe takes you from thoughtful pattern-, yarn-, and needle-selection to modification, fit, and finishing.

Come by the shop to browse our ever-growing book selection and pick a new title for yourself or for a friend–books do make excellent gifts, after all. We’re offering a special 15% discount on all in-stock books and magazines during Ladies Night Out this Thursday, November 20th, and we’ll be open til 8:00 pm that night. Many other Hillsborough merchants and restaurants will have specials that night as well; come out and explore downtown Hillsborough!

Show and tell: anniversary edition, part 2.

As you may remember from years past, or may have seen in our most recent email newsletter, October 18th marks the eight-year anniversary of the Hillsborough Yarn Shop. We are so grateful to all of you for your support over the years, for shopping and learning and sharing with us. We’ll celebrate another year in business in our usual way: an anniversary sale! From Friday October 17th – Sunday October 19th, everything in the shop will be discounted by 15%, with the exception of classes and that which is already discounted.

Here on the blog, I’m celebrating all of you with another batch of show and tell.

DSCN3755

Joanne came in the other day with a colorful project to share. Above, she models her “Technicolor Cowl” knit in the decadent Alchemy Sanctuary, a velvety blend of merino wool and silk.

DSCN3546

Paula’s needles have been busy lately; she recently brought in two finished projects to share with us! Above is her “Thicket” beret, from Alana Dakos’ Botanical Knits 2, knit in Fibre Company Acadia.

DSCN3548

Paula also knit this “Mix No. 26” with Shibui Pebble, a different yarn, but a nice match for her “Thicket” beret. I love it in these low-contrast colors, a soft beige against wintry white.

DSCN3549

Emily came in wearing this “Côte-Nord Cap,” a pattern by Amy Christoffers from last winter’s Interweave Knits, Winter 2014. She used a skein of the new Swans Island All American Worsted in a rich blue hue.

DSCN3739

Thanks to everyone who starts and shares their projects at the Hillsborough Yarn Shop! We find your stitches so inspiring, and your support of the shop is so appreciated. Keep your eyes on the blog for another “show and tell” post soon, and visit us this weekend to take advantage of our Anniversary Sale!

Triangle Yarn Crawl.

The Triangle Yarn Crawl is a self-guided tour of local yarn shops, where knitters and crocheters get together and hop from one shop to the next, shopping, entering raffles, and seeing the full breadth of available fibers. They happen twice a year, and the time has come again: the Autumn 2014 crawl is coming up this weekend on October 11th and 12th!

DSCN3754

Each local yarn shop has something special to offer, and we’re no exception: all 14 of our in-stock Mirasol yarns will be 25% off during the yarn crawl!

DSCN3749

Mirasol yarns come in a wide range of weights and fiber combinations, from sport weight up to bulky, from organic cotton to luxurious alpaca and silk.

DSCN3750

DSCN3751

There’s a bag of goodies at each of the participating shops, a raffle prize full of yarn, patterns, and more.

DSCN3742

DSCN3743

Triangle Yarn Crawl sponsors like Cascade, Berroco, and Lantern Moon generously donated yarns and a needle case for the event, and we’ve tucked something special in the bag, too: 3 skeins of Shibui Pebble, and a copy of “Mix No. 32,” just in time to cast on and join the Shibui Fall Knit-A-Long on Ravelry!

DSCN3745

We’re lucky to live in such a fiber-friendly part of the world, with so many choices available to us, and the Triangle Yarn Crawl is a great time to see all of those choices. Come see us as you’re crawling along!

Post-Market Sale spotlight: Debbie Bliss Stella.

From Friday May 23rd through June 29th, we will have select yarns discounted during our Post-Market Sale: single skeins will be reduced by 30% and full bags of 10 will be 40% off! Throughout the sale, I’ll be highlighting some of these yarns and giving ideas for what to make with them. Today: spotlight on Debbie Bliss Stella.
DSCN3023
Debbie Bliss Stella is an aran weight blend of 60% silk, 20% rayon, and 20% cotton. This combination of fibers makes Stella soft but sturdy, perfect for garments, accessories, and home goods like blankets and market bags. Four skeins will make a “Hexagonal Market Bag,” like the two that are hanging in the shop window now. That’s a quick project for less than $20 at the sale price–think gift-knitting!
DSCN2863
Marsha knit this “Lattice Lace Keyhole Scarf” using just three balls of Stella in a bright pink color. Stella comes in summery brights and neons along with a few neutrals, and is equally at home wrapped ’round a crochet hook as it is a knitting needle; I crocheted this little circular swatch with some of Marsha’s leftover Stella so you can see and feel the resulting fabric.
DSCN3150
Look for more pattern ideas for Stella on our “Post-Market Sale” Pinterest board. You don’t have to be a Pinterest user to peruse it, but if you are, follow us! Come by the shop soon to have the best selection of this gorgeous yarn at this nice price. Two weeks into the sale, we still have full bags available in many colors, but they may not last long–hope to see you at the shop soon!

Post-Market Sale spotlight: Sublime Organic Merino Wool DK.

Today: spotlight on Sublime Organic Merino Wool DK.

DSCN2921

Sublime Organic Merino Wool DK is a soft, fluffy, single-ply yarn, coming in a range of neutrals and soft shades of pink, purple, blue, and green.

DSCN3022

Rosi knit this “Herz & Baum” vest with Organic Merino Wool DK a few years ago, covered with intricate cable patterning. Look for it at the shop to get a sense of the nice, gentle way this yarn renders texture patterns, and check out our “Post-Market Sale” board on Pinterest for more projects made in this and other sale yarns.

DSCN3109

Each 50 gram skein has 113 yards, and suggests a gauge of 5.5 stitches to the inch, though its loftiness means that it’s happy at a bigger gauge, too. Therefore, you can consider Sublime Organic Merino Wool DK for patterns calling for worsted weight yarns as well as those that want DK.

DSCN3103

Heidi Kirrmair’s “Tea with Jam and Bread” pullover calls for worsted weight yarn to be knit to a gauge of 19 stitches = 4 inches, a fabric that Sublime Organic Merino Wool DK will happily knit up to without being loose or floppy. It’s a cozy stockinette sweater with bold colorblock stripes and pockets, sized for children and adults alike, and it’s also the reason I arranged shades of Organic Merino Wool DK in threes for this blog post.

DSCN3106

DSCN3104

Organic Merino Wool DK makes nice accessories as well–pick two shades for the “Quaking Aspen” shawl, or just one for shawls like “Saroyan” or “Terra.” Just a ball or two will make a pair of “Cafe au Lait Mitts” or “Fetchings,” perfect for gift-knitting or trying lace or cables on a small project.

DSCN3102

Come by the shop soon to have the best selection of this gorgeous yarn at this nice price. It’s still early on in the sale, and we have full bags available in many colors, but they may not last long–hope to see you at the shop soon!

A reminder: all sales are final on discounted yarn. There can be no returns or exchanges, nor special orders–the discount applies only to what we currently have in stock. Thanks!
