Triangle Yarn Crawl.

The Triangle Yarn Crawl is a self-guided tour of local yarn shops, where knitters and crocheters get together and hop from one shop to the next, shopping, entering raffles, and seeing the full breadth of available fibers. They happen twice a year, and the time has come again: the Spring 2013 crawl is this weekend, March 23rd and 24th!

There’s a bag like this at each of the participating shops, a raffle prize filled with goodies. What’s in the Hillsborough Yarn Shop prize?

A skein of gorgeous Sincere Sheep Equity Sport yarn, “Reticulated Mitts” pattern, Crystal Palace 35″ circular needles in US sizes 2 and 4, and a HYS needle and hook gauge. In short: everything you need to cast on for a pair of fingerless mitts using the magic loop technique. Come by the shop anytime during business hours on Saturday or Sunday and enter to win!

Additionally, the TYC organizers have planned something special for this Spring event: a scavenger hunt. Look for a stuffed TYC symbol somewhere in each shop, record the letters attached to it, and unscramble the word to reveal a Ravelry coupon code that lets you download a free pattern from local designers. Read more about the scavenger hunt on the TYC website, and look for this somewhere in the shop when you visit us this weekend!

We’re lucky to live in such a fiber-friendly part of the world, with so many choices available to us, and the Triangle Yarn Crawl is a great time to see all of those choices. Come see us this weekend as you’re crawling along, and receive 10% off your purchase when you show your TYC passport!

Araucania Limari: now on sale!

UPDATE: As of 11/19/2014, we are totally sold out of Araucania Limari!

*************************************************************

Next time you come into the shop, you may notice a big basket of bulky wool right in the middle of the front room, by the teacart. What’s in the basket? Why, it’s our latest sale yarn: Araucania Limari.

Araucania Limari is a super-bulky blend of merino wool, alpaca, and silk, and because it’s no longer being produced, we’re now offering it at a 40% discount. It’s perfect for any accessory that needs to be thick, or quickly made: hearty cowls and scarves, cozy hats, and the like.

Araucania Azapa: now on sale!

UPDATE: As of 11/19/2014, we are totally sold out of Araucania Azapa!

*************************************************************

In tandem with our anniversary sale, which entitles our much-appreciated customers to 15% off everything in the shop between October 13th and 21st, we’re discounting Araucania Azapa by 25%.

Araucania Azapa is a bulky weight blend of merino wool, alpaca, silk, and rayon, with about 140 yards on each 100 gram skein. Azapa is a single ply yarn, and comes in semisolid colorways with tweedy flecks. It’s soft and cuddly, makes a great bunny hat, and is exactly the right gauge and length to make a Bandana Cowl.

The Bandana Cowl is a free pattern from the Purl Bee, one which is well-written, easy to understand, and knits up quickly. It was only published a year ago, but already, there are almost 3,000 Bandana Cowls on Ravelry–a number high enough to be considered a recommendation in and of itself. A cozy Bandana Cowl in Araucania Azapa makes a perfect holiday gift or instant-gratification fall knitting project. Come by the shop soon to get it at 25% off!

An anniversary sale, a yarn crawl.

As you may remember from years past, or may have seen in our most recent email newsletter, October marks the six-year anniversary of the Hillsborough Yarn Shop. We are so grateful to all of you for your support over the years, for shopping and learning and sharing with us. We’ll celebrate another year in business in our usual way: an anniversary sale!

From October 13th – 21st, everything in the shop will be discounted by 15%, with the exception of classes and that which is already discounted. This is the time to treat yourself to a special skein or two, or save on that big project you’ve been wanting to start this fall. Maybe you’ve had your eye on a magazine, book, or bag, or just want to stock up on needles–those are all discounted, too. Come by the shop during the sale and let us thank you in person, in a tangible way.

Overlapping with our anniversary sale is this weekend’s Triangle Yarn Crawl, a self-guided tour of local yarn shops throughout the Triangle. We’re delighted to be participating once again, and excited to offer a project bag filled with goodies as our raffle prize, including yarn and a pattern from Swans Island. Learn more about the Triangle Yarn Crawl on their blog, and be sure to pay us a visit this weekend!

(A reminder: all sales are final on sale items; there can be no exchanges, no returns, nor will we special order. Discount applies only to in-store purchases. Thanks!)

A reminder.

July is coming to a close, which means that our annual inventory sale is ending soon. All month, everything in the shop has been discounted by 15%, unless, like the Cascade Lana Bambu or Rustic, they were already more deeply discounted to begin with. So many of you have already taken advantage of this discount, planning your next few sweaters, stocking up on supplies for holiday gift-knitting, indulging in new project bags, or finally getting the set of interchangeable needles you’ve been wanting for so long. For those of you who have been meaning to do any one of those things all month, but putting it off for whatever reason, here’s a reminder:

This is the last weekend of our annual inventory sale! Come into the shop before August 1st to save 15% on your purchase!

Another important sale-related reminder: all sales are final on sale items; there can be no exchanges, no returns, nor will we special order. Discount applies only to in-store purchases. Thanks!

Cascade Rustic and Lana Bambu.

UPDATE: Cascade Rustic and Lana Bambu are totally sold out as of September 2012!

Rustic and Lana Bambu are two yarns with much in common.

They’re both made by the yarn company Cascade, they’re both aran weight, single ply yarns, and they both are 79% wool and 21% plant fiber. In Rustic, that plant fiber is linen, and in Lana Bambu, it’s bamboo, as you might have suspected.

The other thing they have in common is that they’ll be deeply discounted during the month of July. But wait, you’re thinking, isn’t everything discounted during the month of July? You’re right: everything in the shop is 15% off during our Annual Inventory Sale. Rustic and Lana Bambu, however, are 20% off during the month of July, making them an even better deal.

Both of these yarns are equally lovely in hats, scarves, shawls, and sweaters. We’ve seen them both used in February Lady Sweaters, and they’re perfect yarns for that frequently-knitted free pattern. Here’s a peek at Marion’s February Lady Sweater in Lana Bambu, which is hanging in the shop.

Come by the shop to take a closer look at this gorgeous cardigan, and to take advantage of our 15% sale on everything and our 20% sale on Rustic and Lana Bambu!

Annual Inventory Sale!

As many of you know, July is our annual inventory sale month. From the 1st to the 31st, everything in the shop is discounted by 15%, with the exception of classes and yarns that have already been discounted. If you’ve had your eye on a special skein, or have been planning a big project or two, now is the time to take the leap! Maybe you, like me, are excited to join in the HYS Stasis Sweater Knit-Along, and are seeking a sweater’s worth of fingering weight yarn for this colorwork-yoked pullover. I picked the classic Jamieson’s 2 ply Jumper Yarn, and can hardly wait to get started.

Or maybe you’ve been contemplating the Stole from Wearwithall, made in nine scrumptious colors of Isager Alpaca 2 yarn. Since the book was published, Anne and I have seen so many beautiful color combinations put together. Every knitter makes the Stole their own. Lucky for you, Stole-contemplator, we’ve just gotten every available color of Isager Alpaca 2 in stock, and you can have the color combination of your choice at 15% off during July.

Or maybe for you, it’s a few indulgent skeins of Malabrigo Finito, the softest merino we’ve encountered thusfar. Or maybe you’re a kind and generous soul, and will use this sale month to stock up on gift-making supplies for next holiday season. Maybe you’ve been holding out on a set of Addi Click interchangeable circular needles, or a copy of the enormous Principles of Knitting, or a new knitting bag from Namaste. Whatever it is you’ve been wanting, come by the shop anytime during the month of July to get 15% off your purchase!

Just a reminder–all sales are final on sale items; there can be no exchanges, no returns, nor will we special order. Discount applies only to in-store purchases. Thanks!

Ella Rae Classic Wool.

This week, we have select yarns on sale at the shop, and they’re a diverse bunch. Among the ribbon yarn, self-striping sock yarn, bulky tweed, and fuzzy boucle, you’ll find Ella Rae Classic Wool. One of the bunch, but different.

Classic Wool is so named for a reason: it’s a basic, smooth, worsted weight wool, a real workhorse yarn. With 219 yards on each 100 gram ball, it’s a generous skein, enough for a pair of mittens, a hat, or a small scarf. It’s one of the yarns we suggest to beginning knitters, who find it well-behaved and easy to use. Classic Wool is also perfect for felting projects, like bags, slippers, hats, hotpads, and oven mitts. Anne knit this one with Classic Wool held doubled, which ensured a sturdy felted fabric.

Come by the shop this week to get Classic Wool at a 25% discount! Our last week of Going-to-Market sales will end when we close up shop at 5:00 pm on Sunday the 17th. Hope to see you at the shop before then!

Noro Kureyon Sock.

I know I already mentioned Noro Kureyon Sock when I introduced Week 3 of the Going-to-Market sale. But this morning, as I pulled every skein of Kureyon Sock out from back-room storage to display our whole supply in one big basket, I thought a bullet-point on a list might not have been enough. After all, this yarn has its devotees.

I’ve seen many pairs of incredible socks made up in Kureyon Sock. Like most Noro yarns, Kureyon Sock is self-striping, making a simple vanilla sock exciting, and shining in entrelac and colorwork patterns. Kureyon Sock is also ideal for fine-gauge scarves, shawls, cowls, hats, and mitts. I haven’t worked with it myself, but again and again, I hear that it softens and blooms after washing.

Come by the shop this week to snag a skein or two of Kureyon Sock at 25% off. At less than fifteen dollars a skein, it’s a good time to stock up on a yarn you love or sample a yarn you’ve never tried. See you at the shop!

Just a reminder–all sales are final on sale items; there can be no exchanges, no returns, nor will we special order. Thanks!

Berroco Touche.

Here’s another Berroco yarn that we have on sale this week: Touche.

Touche is a machine-washable, worsted weight blend of cotton and rayon. It’s soft and squishy, with a bit more elasticity than one usually expects from plant fibers, making it quite pleasant to knit with. It’s softness and easy care make it perfect for baby things, like this simple baby hat. I made it with one skein of Touche this week, and it took only a few hours. The pattern is the Super Simple Hat Calculator, a free pattern that gives instructions for a variety of sizes and gauges. This means that whatever yarn you choose can successfully become a hat with the help of the Super Simple Hat Calculator. This means that we turn to the Super Simple Hat Calculator again and again and again.

Touche and many other Berroco yarns are 25% off until Sunday the 10th, which, as I write this, is tomorrow, so come by soon to shop Week 2 of our Going-to-Market sale! Many of these Berroco yarns were quite affordable to begin with, making them irresistibly inexpensive at 25% off. Between the free pattern and the sale yarn, you could be knitting this baby hat for less than four dollars. Irresistible, no? See you at the shop!
