HYS Color Club: Loch Lomond + Pressed Flowers.

The Spring season of HYS Color Club wraps up with a bigger project, a fun change of pace after April’s “Duality” scarf.

Club members got seven skeins of BC Garn Loch Lomond to knit Any Christoffers’ “Pressed Flowers,” a 2-color triangular shawl covered in mosaic stitch flowers.

A high contrast color combination is important for this project, ensuring that the pattern shows clearly. It was so fun to pick pairs for each of our Club members in these rich, tweedy colorways – I can’t wait to see their shawls take shape!

Of course, you can make a “Pressed Flowers” even if you didn’t join the HYS Color Club – just pick out two colors you love in Loch Lomond or another DK weight yarn.

BC Garn Loch Lomond: DK weight, 2 ply tweed, 100% wool, 170 yards/50 grams; $14 each. For “Pressed Flowers,” you’ll need 4 skeins in Main Color and 3 skeins in Contrast Color.

Loft + SSP (slip stitch party) shawl.

Isabell Kraemer’s latest design looks like so much fun, a slip stitch shawl in six shades of Brooklyn Tweed Loft!

As soon as I saw “SSP (slip stitch party) shawl,” I went straight for our Loft display, intrigued by the play of low and high contrast combinations in Kraemer’s design.

Here are a few more possibilities, though with 35+ shades in stock, this is just the tip of the iceberg!

We recently ordered a big bundle of Loft, anticipating upcoming shortages due to the permanent closure of the Philadelphia dyehouse Brooklyn Tweed has been working with since 2010. Unfortunately, this means that our most recent shipment of Loft may be our last of 2022. BT is working hard to find a new way to produce their beloved woolen spun yarns, but in the meantime, we’re well stocked in Loft and Shelter!

HYS Color Club: Rios + Inclinations Shawl.

The Winter season of HYS Color Club wraps up with a bigger project, a fun change of pace after January’s colorwork mitts.

Club members got six skeins of Malabrigo Rios to knit Andrea Mowry’s “Inclinations Shawl,” a colorful triangular shawl knit in half fisherman’s rib.

For this project, the six color palette is composed of two three-skein fades for a harmonious colorway. From there, the colors can be arranged in many different ways – I can’t wait to see these shawls take shape!

Of course, you can make an “Inclinations Shawl” even if you didn’t join the HYS Color Club – just pick out six colors you love in Malabrigo Rios.

The latest book from Laine Publishing is here – let’s look at Worsted: a Knitwear Collection Curated by Aimée Gille of La Bien Aimée!

Aimée Gille is the dyer behind La Bien Aimée, and for this collection, she reached out to designers with a wide range of aesthetics, whose work differs from one another and speaks to all kinds of knitters.

Many of these designers are well known, and the others are worth getting to know – Nadia Crétin-Léchenne, Stephen West, Sylvia Watts-Cherry, Andrea Mowry, Tif Neilan, Saysha Greene, Norah Gaughan, Maxim Cyr, Nancy Marchant and Thien-Kieu Lam. She asked them to create sweaters and accessories in her new Corrie Worsted yarn, and what they’ve come up with is inspiring and varied, indeed!

While we don’t carry La Bien Aimée Corrie Worsted, we have so many lovely substitutes in our worsted weight section: Brooklyn Tweed Shelter and Tones, Kelbourne Woolens Germantown, Malabrigo Rios, Fibre Co. Cumbria Worsted, Berroco Ultra Alpaca, Plymouth Galway, Ewe Ewe Wooly Worsted, and more.

Shelter or Tones + Ramblewood shawl.

Tamy Gore’s newest pattern caught my eye – check out “Ramblewood,” a five color shawl knit in Brooklyn Tweed Shelter.

This triangular shawl features slipped stitches, stripes, and eyelets, the techniques shifting from section to section. I love the colors Tamy Gore put together for the “Ramblewood” pictured above – a neutral palette of grays with an autumnal pop of mossy green and amber.

Brooklyn Tweed Shelter: worsted weight, 100% Targhee-Columbia wool, 140 yards/50 g; $16.50 each, or $115.50 for seven skeins needed to knit “Ramblewood.”

I put together a few more color combinations in both Shelter and Tones, pairing other pops of color with these neutrals.

Studio Sock + Studio Sampler.

Itching to cast on with our newest arrival, Neighborhood Fiber Co. Studio Sock? Consider Leslie Anne Robinson’s “Studio Sampler,” an asymmetric triangular shawl.

Robinson’s design moves through garter stitch, stripes, and brioche, keeping things interesting with a variety of stitch patterns and color combinations.

Pick three shades that excite you and have fun watching them interact as you knit – they can be high or low contrast, from the same color family or not. Here are a few combinations I came up with!

Yarn ideas for Stephen West’s “Shawlography” MKAL.

We know many of you are fans of designer Stephen West and often participate in his annual Mystery Knit-Alongs – it’s that time of year again, and “Shawlography” is the pattern-to-be. It calls for five colors of fingering weight yarn, 100g each, and West’s motto for yarn selection this year is, “Say yes, don’t stress!” – as in, all kinds of fingering weight yarns are welcome here, and we have tons to choose from at the shop!

Lady Dye Superwash Fingering, $32 each

Stephen West made a very helpful video about color selection, and I watched it carefully before putting these combinations together. He suggests sticking with solid or semi-solid yarns for maximum contrast, though speckles may be used sparingly.

It’s important to have some light colors, some medium, and some dark for this design – this provides contrast as the colors interact with one another throughout the shawl.

One strategy West recommends is selecting five shades from one color family, being sure to include lights, mediums, and darks.

Lisa Hannes’ latest design has us playing the color game… here are some yarn ideas for “Summernight Sky,” a two color mosaic shawl.

Hannes uses a fingering weight, single ply, superwash merino – one shade is semi-solid, and the other variegated. A high contrast color combination will ensure that the mosaic pattern shows.

New colors in Malabrigo Sock!

This week brought us 15 new colors in Malabrigo Sock!

Malabrigo Sock:

  • light fingering weight
  • hand dyed, variegated and semi-solid colorways
  • 100% superwash merino wool
  • 440 yards/100g
  • $20 each

This is Malabrigo’s new Encantados collection, unique hand dyed colorways inspired by fairytales and children’s stories.

I’ve arranged these shades in coordinating trios, thinking of Malabrigo’s popular “Temperance Shawl,” but there are so many other ways of combining these shades – it’s a rich palette, full of possibilities!

You may recognize this last combination, Jasmine, Gingy, and Myths – they were premiered earlier in the year, and you can see them knit into a “Temperance Shawl” below.

Show and tell!

It’s been too long since I shared some show and tell here on the blog! Those of you who follow us on Instagram may have seen some of these inspiring projects over the past few months, but they’re all worth a bit more attention – let’s take a look.

Here’s Kathryn with her “Slipstravaganza” shawl, designed by Stephen West for his annual Mystery Knit-Along last fall. She used Dream in Color Smooshy Cashmere for a soft and surprisingly sturdy accessory – she reported no pilling even after plenty of wear.

Another Stephen West pattern! Michele knit this “Brioche Soundwaves” with Brooklyn Tweed Arbor, which has superb stitch definition, ideal for an intricate pattern like this.

Here Emily models her cozy “Nightshift” shawl, a popular pattern by Andrea Mowry. She used a mix of solid and marled colors to great effect – Brooklyn Tweed Shelter is the yarn.

Here’s another “Nightshift,” knit by Kay for her sister using Malabrigo Rios. We’ve seen this shawl knit with solids and hand-dyes, variegated and speckled shades, even self-striping colors, and many knitters come back to make a second or third!

Nancy brought her “Chrysalis Throw” in during an in-store shopping appointment, wowing us with her use of color. She’s crocheting this large and impressive blanket with Cascade Ultra Pima – pattern by Jen Tyler.

Deedra is an avid Koigu collector, and used some of her skeins to knit the “Pacific Shake Cowl” above. Taiu Landra designed it using two strands of Koigu KPPPM at a time, marling different shades for unique color blends.
