Shibui Sample of the Month: Mix No. 23.

This month’s featured sample is one of our own, a “Mix No. 23” cowl that Amy knit. This reversible double-knit cowl was designed by Lidia Tsymbal, and knit with Shibui Cima held double throughout.

I knit a “Mix No. 23” for myself a couple of years ago, and it served as my introduction to Shibui and to double knitting. It’s by far my favorite handknit accessory, I wear it every day of the winter and most of the fall and spring. Knitters often ask me if it’s difficult to do, and though “difficult” is in the eye of the beholder, I’d consider this a bit of a challenge, but a rewarding one. The double-knit chart took a bit of getting used to, and it was a few long rows before I realized how I was making two pieces of fabric at once. Since both colors are in use on every row, I found it really useful to hold one color in my right hand and one in my left as I worked.

Shibui Sample of the Month: Trace.

December is here, and with it, a new Shibui Sample of the Month! We offer a 10% discount on Shibui yarns purchased for our featured sample til the end of the month.

Our current Shibui Sample of the Month is “Trace,” by Shellie Anderson, a simple stockinette pullover framed by ribbing along the sides and bottom edge.

The main body of the sweater is knit with Shibui Maai, a soft blend of merino and alpaca plied into a springy chainette.

The ribbed details are knit with Shibui Pebble and Cima held together throughout, with tweedy Pebble providing a slight contrast even in a matching colorway; here are sets of all three yarns in “Trail” and “Pollen” to illustrate.

You can also up the contrast by selecting Pebble in a different colorway entirely; here’s Maai and Cima in “Brownstone” with a pop of Pebble in “Poppy.”

Shibui Sample of the Month: Breton Cowl colorways.

Our November Shibui Sample of the Month is on display at the shop til November 30th, and we’re offering the Shibui yarns for this project at 10% off throughout the month!

This particular “Breton Cowl” is knit with a relatively high-contrast combination of colors, namely Drift in “Graphite” and Silk Cloud in “Suit.” There’s an argument to be made that high-contrast colorways are better suited to this pattern than subtle ones, and here are a few such colorways.

Ginny recently brought her finished “Breton Cowl” in for show-and-tell, and it’s this very combination that she used. I love the bright pop of “Raspberry” against the deeply saturated “Velvet.”

For those who favor subtlety, here are a couple of low-contrast color combinations that I find just as exciting.

Shibui Sample of the Month: Nova colorways.

Our October Shibui Sample of the Month is on display at the shop til October 30th, and we’re offering the Shibui yarns for this project at 10% off throughout the month!

This particular “Nova” is knit with two different yarns held together, dk weight Dune and lace weight Cima, each in the color “Cove.” “Cove” looks a bit different in Dune than it does in Cima, due to the difference in fiber content and texture, but they blend together seamlessly to create a nearly-solid fabric.

One of the most exciting things about mixing yarns like this is the possibility for blending different colors. Suppose instead of matching “Cove” with “Cove,” you selected a color just a shade lighter, like “Fjord,” or paired it with “Suit” to emphasize the blue?

Blending colors this way opens a world of possibilities, especially with 20+ shades of Cima on our shelves. Here are a few other ideas.

Shibui Sample of the Month: Stole 2.0 colorways.

Our September Shibui Sample of the Month is on display at the shop til September 30th, and we’re offering the Shibui yarns for this project at 10% off throughout the month!

Theresa Gaffey’s “Stole 2.0” looks great in these cool neutrals with a pop of “Pollen,” but there are so many more options as far as colors are concerned; when this garment arrived, I went straight to our Shibui yarns to play matchmaker.

Above is a warmer take on the same color strategy, with a gradient of neutrals in Pebble (“Ivory,” “Sidewalk,” and “Caffeine”) and a bright pop of Silk Cloud in “Brownstone.” That pop could easily be a golden yellow, deep purple, or clear blue, or any bright shade you might favor. We have Silk Cloud in oodles of colors!

This next colorway is cool and watery, with Pebble in “Fjord,” “Canal,” and “Suit,” outlined by Silk Cloud in “Fog.”

This one is bold and bright, with a higher contrast edging: Pebble in “Clay,” “Poppy,” and “Bordeaux,” and Silk Cloud in “Tar.”

Here’s a more colorful selection: Pebble in “Pollen,” “Graphite,” and “Velvet,” trimmed in Silk Cloud “Caffeine.”

Our current Shibui Sample of the Month is “Stole 2.0,” by Theresa Gaffey.

This striking wrap was knit in three shades of Shibui Pebble, outlined in a thin stripe of Silk Cloud.

Each color block is knit in a different direction, so the grain of the knitted fabric is sometimes vertical, sometimes horizontal.

Slope.

We’re pleased to announce the arrival of a new knit sample here at the shop, and a new monthly feature, to boot: here’s “Slope,” knit in Shibui Dune, our inaugural Shibui Sample of the Month!

Last year, Anne knit her own “Slope,” a curved-hem tank in the lightweight Shibui Twig. Most of the time it lives on the wall here at the shop, though she’s taken it down for special occasions, the likes of a wedding, and TNNA.

The design has been a runaway hit for Shibui as well as our shop, requiring several reorders of Twig in “Brick,” the color Anne’s “Slope” is made in.

This new teal “Slope” belongs to Sandy Barnes, Shibui’s sales manager and someone we love to catch up with at TNNA each year. She knit her “Slope” in Dune, making it a fall and winter layering piece that looks sharp over a long-sleeved tee or button-down collared shirt. Though the fiber content is very different from Twig, Dune possesses just as much drape, which very much suits the shape of this garment, whatever the season.

We’ll have Sandy’s “Slope” in Dune on display throughout August, and are offering a 10% discount on Dune purchased for this project until August 31st. Come by the shop to see it for yourself and plan a “Slope” for your own fall wardrobe!
