Shibui FW 2018 Trunk Show!

The Shibui FW18 Trunk Show arrived early, much to our delight!

This collection features many of our favorite Shibui yarns, including Birch, Cima, Drift, Lunar, Maai, Pebble, Silk Cloud, and their newest yarn, Echo – all of which will be 10% off during the trunk show. The patterns are pleasingly named for influential female writers – “Angelou,” “Sontag,” “Plath,” and so on.

This two-tone cowl, “Didion,” is created by simply knitting two rectangles and grafting them to create interlocking loops, like the links of a chain. The pattern is free when you purchase the yarn from our shop.

As ever, many of these garments use two or more yarns held together to create unique fabric, and they share that elegant, simple-with-a-twist aesthetic that Shibui is known for.

All of the patterns are available as Ravelry In-Store Pattern Sales, where we print a copy for you and a digital copy is also saved in your email or Ravelry pattern library. Visit us before January 22nd to plan your next project in Shibui yarns!

A reminder: all sales are final on discounted yarn, so there can be no returns or exchanges. Thanks!

Brooklyn Tweed Trunk Show: Early Fall 18.

Our latest Brooklyn Tweed Trunk Show just arrived, featuring garments and accessories from their Early Fall 18 collection!

Designs in this group were inspired by origami, and feature geometric texture patterns in BT’s worsted-spun yarns, ValePeerie, and Arbor. All three of these yarns boast sharp stitch definition, ideal for showing texture and lace.

Seeing these garments close up and in person is one of the great joys of a Trunk Show. Another joy is trying them on for size, making sure you like the fit and feel before you invest in a big project. We like to add one more joy: a 10% discount on purchases of the featured BT yarns during the trunk show!

We’ll have the show until December 16, and then we’ll pack it up and send it on to the next shop. Come in soon to take a look!

Just a reminder–all sales are final on discounted items; there can be no exchanges or returns. Thanks!

Fibre Company Trunk Show: the Borrowdale Collection.

We’re so excited to announce that we’ve just received a Trunk Show featuring Fibre Company Lore. Come by the shop to see the Borrowdale Collection!

Lore is the newest yarn from Fibre Company, a woolen spun, DK weight, 100% Romney lambswool. It has a rustic look and texture at home in hard-wearing, workaday garments, and is sturdy enough to last a lifetime when cared for.

We just got six new colors in last week, making our Lore selection complete!

The Borrowdale Collection was designed with everyday adventures in mind, and the garments featured here are as practical as they are beautiful, rich with cables and texture and color. All of these patterns are available on Ravelry, or here at the shop as Ravelry In-Store Sales.

Hurry in to admire the Borrowdale Collection Trunk Show, try some sweaters on for size, and plan one for yourself. We’re offering a 10% discount on Lore during the show, too – all the more reason to stop by and admire!

A reminder: all sales are final on discounted items; there will be no exchanges or returns. Thanks!

Brooklyn Tweed Trunk Show: Winter 18.

We’re excited to have a new Trunk Show decorating our walls. Come by the shop before October 14 to see the Brooklyn Tweed Winter 18 collection!

The Brooklyn Tweed design team is prolific, and creates new pattern collections several times a year. Each one is met with excitement here at the Hillsborough Yarn Shop; Anne and I often scroll through the lookbook together on launch day, pointing out sweaters we’d love to make.

We’ve been especially looking forward to seeing Norah Gaughan’s “Geiger” cardigan, shown on the right in Kettle black. It caught Amy’s eye as soon as the collection was published in January, and she’s cooking up a class on this intricate cabled cardigan for Spring 2019. Let us know if you’re interested in such a class, and we’ll be sure to notify you when more details are available!

For me, Gudrun Johnston’s “Kirigami” and Julie Hoover’s “Nolan” are the stars of this show, patterns I’ve been looking forward to seeing. Both of these, like “Geiger,” are knit with Brooklyn Tweed Arbor, an ideal yarn for showing off texture patterns. Anne and I both took a shine to Jared Flood’s “Freja,” a quick short-sleeved knit in Quarry. Which are your favorites?

Seeing these garments close up and in person is one of the great joys of a Trunk Show. Another joy is trying them on for size, making sure you like the fit and feel before you invest in a big project. We like to add one more joy: a 10% discount on purchases of the featured BT yarns during the trunk show!

Come by the shop to see this breathtaking collection for yourself, and plan your next project in Brooklyn Tweed yarns at 10% off! See you there.

A reminder: all sales are final on discounted yarn. There can be no returns or exchanges. Thanks!

Kelbourne Woolens Scout Collection Trunk Show!

An exciting new trunk show has come to decorate our walls for a couple of weeks. Hurry in before August 26 to see the Kelbourne Woolens Scout Collection!

The Scout Collection is composed of six garments knit with Kelbourne Woolens Scout, a springy DK weight wool that is well suited to texture, color, lace, and cable patterns.

Most of these patterns were designed by Kate Gagnon Osborn, with one contribution each from Courtney Kelley and Meghan Kelly; the three of them make up the Kelbourne Woolens team. They’ve made their patterns available through Ravelry rather than in print, an effort to diminish the company’s paper usage.

We also have another mini trunk show of sorts – local designer Emily Walton has just published a brand new pattern for Scout, and we’re showing her samples! Below is “Olivia Twisted,” a clever hat with twisted stitches and a bit of texture, perfect for showing off Scout’s heathered shades.

Give Scout and all the other Kelbourne Woolens yarns a try at this Sunday’s Yarn Tasting – we still have some spaces available! It’s an opportunity to sample yarn before you buy it, to brainstorm pattern ideas and color combinations with other knitters, and to spend a pleasant morning at the shop sipping mimosas – sign up to join us!

Just a reminder–all sales are final on discounted items; there can be no exchanges, returns, or special orders. Thanks!

Kelbourne Woolens Mojave Collection Trunk Show!

Another trunk show has come to decorate our walls for a couple of weeks. Hurry in before July 15th to see the Kelbourne Woolens Mojave Collection!

The Mojave Collection is composed of six garments knit with Kelbourne Woolens’ newest yarn, Mojave. This cotton/linen blend landed in our sport weight section here at the shop less than a week ago, and so hasn’t had a proper introduction here on the blog – I’ll remedy that in the next couple of days.

Every piece was designed by Meghan Kelly of Kelbourne Woolens, whose love of plant fibers and bright colors are obvious in this collection.

Read more about the development of Mojave and the Mojave Collection in this interview with Meghan on the KW blog!

Look for the patterns on Ravelry, the yarn in our sport weight section, and the trunk show on our walls here at the shop until July 15th. Remember, July is our Annual Inventory Sale month, so everything in stock is 15% off – see you there!

Just a reminder–all sales are final on discounted items; there can be no exchanges, returns, or special orders. Thanks!

Brooklyn Tweed Peerie Trunk Show!

We are delighted to announce that a new trunk show from Brooklyn Tweed is here to spend a couple of weeks at our shop. Come by before July 8 to see garments and accessories from the Peerie Collection!

This little group is knit all in Peerie, Brooklyn Tweed’s newest addition, a fingering weight merino yarn that’s worsted spun for sharp stitch definition.

Three of these are designs from the BT archives, originally designed for Loft, and they show Peerie’s strengths in cables, texture, and lace.

Jared Flood’s new design for Peerie is the “Lucerne” hat, a colorwork playground for this, their most colorful line of yarn.

The “Lucerne” pattern is free with any Peerie purchase until June 30th, and we’re offering a 10% discount on Peerie during the Trunk Show, too – hurry in to take advantage and see these lovely garments for yourself!

Just a reminder–all sales are final on discounted items; there can be no exchanges or returns. Thanks!

Shibui Trunk Show: Spring/Summer 2018.

Our walls are newly decorated with an exciting Shibui Trunk Show! We’ll have 8 garments from their Spring/Summer 2018 pattern collection on display here at the shop until Sunday, May 20th, 2018.

Earlier in the Spring, Shibui released three new colors, Bone, Shore, and White, and the whole show is knit up in a combination of those three – a striking collection.

As ever, Shibui loves to combine yarns, often two strands at a time for unique fiber blends.

There’s some of that in this collection, but you’ll also find two yarns used separately within the same garment – a tank knit with Fern but trimmed in Silk Cloud, for example.

The following Shibui yarns are featured in this collection: Lunar, Silk Cloud, Cima, Reed, Fern, Twig, and Rain. All of the above are 10% off during the show, so come by and see it soon to take advantage of the discount!

See you at the shop!

A reminder: all sales are final on discounted yarn. There can be no returns or exchanges, nor special orders–the discount applies only to what we currently have in stock. Thanks!

Brooklyn Tweed Trunk Show: Fall 17.

A Brooklyn Tweed Trunk Show has made a temporary home here at the shop. It’s such a treat to see these designs in person after admiring them online!

These garments and accessories make up Brooklyn Tweed’s Fall 17 pattern collection, a group of designs rich with texture.

As ever, I’m especially drawn to the colorwork patterns – Gudrun Johnston’s “Voe” pullover, Julie Hoover’s “Sommers” cap, and Jared Flood’s “Galloway” cardigan. This last showstopping piece is the subject of Amy’s upcoming class here at the shop – just a couple of spaces left, so sign up right away if you’d like to attend!

All of Brooklyn Tweed’s core yarns are represented: the lace weight Vale, fingering weight Loft, DK weight Arbor, worsted weight Shelter, and bulky weight Quarry.

All of these yarns are 10% off while the Trunk Show is on display – from now until Sunday, May 6th.

See you at the shop!

Just a reminder–all sales are final on discounted items; there can be no exchanges or returns. Thanks!

HYS Colorwork Trunk Show.

One of our special attractions for this year’s Triangle Yarn Crawl is a collection of garments made by knitters in our community – folks who work, teach, and shop here at the Hillsborough Yarn Shop. The theme is colorwork, interpreted somewhat broadly to include not only fair isle, but also intarsia, double knitting, brioche, log cabin and short-row-shaped patterns made with self-striping yarns.

It’s an inspiring group – come by the shop during the Triangle Yarn Crawl to see the following garments:

  • Log cabin blanket, based on Sarah Bradberry’s “Log Cabin Square,” knit with Noro Kureyon and Plymouth Galway. Made by Rosi, who works at our shop most Sundays.
  • “Rionnag Cowl,” by Kerry Bullock-Ozkan, a local designer who knit this piece with Tukuwool Fingering.

We’ve also pulled together some of our tried and true colorwork samples from around the shop – Anne’s “Candy Darling” in Fibre Company Arranmore Light, Amy’s “First Footing” in Jamieson’s Shetland Spindrift and “Mix No. 23” in Shibui Cima, my “Cliff Hat” in Shibui Pebble, “Autumn Tam” in Jamieson’s Shetland Spindrift, and “2 Color Cotton Cowl” in Fyberspates Scrumptious 4ply.

It’s so exciting to see this riot of color covering our walls – many thanks to the talented knitters who lent their garments to this show!
